Proclamation
Whereas, Hispanic and Latino Americans are California’s largest ethnic minority at forty percent of the State’s population -- more than 15 million residents; and
Whereas, each year, we observe Hispanic and Latino American Heritage Month by celebrating the contributions that have been made to our country and community by Hispanic and Latino residents whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America; and Whereas, Hispanic and Latino Americans are civil rights leaders and community organizers, politicians, soldiers, educators, jour nalists, first responders, pioneers in art and science, healthcare professionals, athletes, inventors, entertainers, and so much more; and Whereas, this year’s theme, “Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation,” encourages us to ensure that all voices are represented and welcome d to help build stronger communities and a stronger nation, and reminds us of our common goals as we work toward a more inclusive , equitable society in Alameda, where everyone belongs here; and
Whereas, diversity is strength, and we must do the work to achieve a brighter, more equitable future. We honor the resilience of Latino and Hispanic communities who have persisted through centuries of discrimination to lead movements for justice and equality. As labor leader and civil rights activist Dolores Huerta said, “The leaders come up from the volunteers that do the work, and it’s amazing because then they do these incredible things in their community that they never thought they had the power to make happen;” and
Whereas, during National Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month, we reaffirm the City of Alameda’s commitment to the values of dignity, inclusivity, and respect for all, regardless of ethnic or national origin, gender, race, religio n, sexual orientation, ability or immigration status.
Now, therefore be it resolved, that I, Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft, Mayor of the City of Alameda, hereby proclaim September 15 through October 15, 2022 to be
National Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month
in the City of Alameda and call on all residents to join me in recognizing the continuing contributions made by Hispanic and Latino Americans.
Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft
