I am only ok with this if it does not have any way to hurt anyone. For visual/audio inspection to protect police and bystanders, that seems reasonable. if there was ever a request to use this to apprehend or use force I would say do not purchase or use. If we have a robot to execute some search warrants and take over some police duties - where is the commensurate reduction in actual staff? Keeping a tool on hand that does a cop's job means you need less cops. You can't have it both ways.

I'm extremely concerned about having a militarized vehicle in a city of less than 80,000 people. The armed forces discontinued the majority of their operations here on the island of Alameda. We're not a military town anymore nor do we have any threats even remotely imaginable that require a militarized vehicle. In fact, the only reason APD still has it is because one person changed her mind (Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft). Per AB 481, it seems like a tall order to say there's no "reasonable alternative that can achieve the same objective of officer and civilian safety." Especially considering you have a fucking robot and like 100s of guns.

I'm am vehemently opposed to these. This makes a police department into an occupying force that is positioned in direct opposition to residents of city. Last time I looked at what APD's job descriptions entail, it's 100% not this. Also, as noted in the inventory list on this item, it results in torture for the person it's used against. Sensory depravation can be deadly for people with seizure disorder and other nuerological conditions. I wouldn't say that's a great place to start when APD already has a murder of an unarmed individual under its belt.
