SUBJECT: Agenda Item #7-C 2023-3016, 5/16/2023 City Council Agenda Approve Purchase & Installation of Plate Readers in Police Vehicles This letter is in support of the above agenda item.
Property crimes, especially with vehicles, seem to be escalating and spreading across all Alameda neighborhoods. No area is spared. It is understood that Alameda’s police department is greatly understaffed. Modern day tools can assist officers in doing their jobs quickly and effectively. Protecting Alameda residents and property is imperative.
I strongly support the installation of In-Car Dash Cameras with license plate recognition in police vehicles. The additional system will provide stronger and more accurate leads to assist in police investigations. This includes the flagrant thefts of catalytic converters as well as other vehicle break-ins which are causing great direst and high replacement costs for Alameda residents.
Thank you for your attention and support of this crucial matter.
Regards,
Linda Pon

I am writing in support of subject agenda item.
Property crimes, especially against vehicles, seem to be escalating and spreading across all Alameda neighborhoods. No area is spared. It is understood that Alameda’s police department is greatly understaffed at this time. Good tools can assist existing officers to more quickly and effectively do their jobs and protect Alameda residents and property.
I strongly support installation of In-Car Dash Cameras with license plate recognition systems in official police vehicles, and believe the additional system will provide stronger and more accurate leads to assist with police investigations into the flagrant thefts of catalytic converters as well as other vehicle break-ins which are causing great inconvenience and high replacement cost for Alameda residents.
The additional opportunity to provide police officer accountability as a matter of practice is also a very important consideration.
Thank you for your attention and support of this crucial matter.
Sincerely yours,

SUBJECT: City Council Agenda Item #7-C 2023-3016
Install License Plate Readers in Police Vehicles
This letter is in support of license plate readers in police vehicles
A few weeks ago early in the morning, my pick-up truck parked in front of the house was targeted by the out-of-control catalytic converter thieves. I’m still feeling angry and violated by their actions. Even worse, pickup trucks often have more than one converter installed – it turns out that my truck has 4 converters and the cost to replace them is horrendous. Plus it’s not just the converters, but O2 sensors and other parts and labor came to over $13,000, which is a pretty steep tab when it’s not an expected or planned expense. To try and reduce a second occurrence, I had some additional protection installed for the new converters bringing the total to over $15,000.
Vehicle crimes have gotten worse here. I support license plate readers in police cars to assist police in reducing the thefts of catalytic converters and other car thefts in Alameda, and to provide solid leads to help catch the criminals. This is a good opportunity to give the police effective equipment to help reduce the terribly expensive rash of thefts.
Thank you for your support for this important project.
Sincerely,
Allan Massingill
