Please shorten the length of the lease with ASPA. Or add some consequences for not fulfilling openness qualifications.

I found Kinderswim to be mostly useless, because of the extremely tight scheduling. Ruby Bridges TK got out ten minutes later than the other TKs. Plus ten minute travel time to get home. Plus get dressed for swimming. Skip any snack! Load back up... Got there halfway through.

I want to be able to pay a fee and swim. I don't want to have to volunteer or pay a membership fee.

Thank you,
Alex Spehr

Hello
I do not normally contact my representatives in government and am not active in politics.

I am making an exception in this case to support renewal of the ASPA lease.

I cannot fully explain or convey in mere written words the profound value and beauty that ASPA brings to all members of our community.

Please consider the good that this organization has done and will continue to do if the lease is renewed.

Thank you for your consideration in this matter.

Sincerely,
Krista Bramble

Dear Ms. Spencer,
Please renew the lease for the Alameda Swimming Pool Association. This community resource is EXACTLY the essence of what it means to live in Alameda. I have been a member of the pool association for decades and a homeowner in Alameda since 1985.

Here’s a few highlights:

1. It is far cheaper to join the pool association than it is to go to the public pools regularly.

2. It’s great to get to know all your neighbors at the pool.

3. The kids’ swim classes are fantastic - for that reason along, ASPA is totally cost effective.

4. A sense of ownership of this great resource is kindled in EVERYONE who belongs - what could be better than that.

ASPA is a longstanding and wonderful Alameda treasure. I implore you to renew the lease! Respectfully,
Peg Magarian

To our honorable mayor and city council members,
It has been such a privilege to be able to enjoy outdoor swimming since I moved to Alameda in 1988. Countless kids have been taught at an early age to not fear water and be comfortable or even excel at swimming, exercise lasting the rest of their lives. Very few communities have such programs. I for one, did not growing up. Our senior citizens enjoy free low impact exercise twice weekly. We are so lucky to live in this city. I believe the pool programs are such an incredible asset and I encourage you to renew the pools’ lease.

Yours truly,
Andrea Wilder

Hi City Council,
The ASPA pool is very valuable to my family. I have grown up using the pool as a little girl and want to have the same for my kids. We don't have many pool options around the island so keeping these 2 pools accessible to our community is critical. I would recommend approval of renewing the lease please!
Thank you!

Good afternoon Councilmember Herrera Spencer
I have been a member of the LIncoln/Franklin swimming pools since they opened in the 1950's. I learned to swim there and then went on to swim with the Alameda Swim Team. I have many fond memories of swim classes and weekend family time at the pools. I was able to gain many friendships through the years with my swimming companions that I still have to this day.

As an adult, I also became a member of the pools and taught my children to swim there. They went on to swim with the Alligator Swim Team and also became lifeguards and swim instructors when they were teenagers and young adults.

Now, as a grandparent, I have been teaching some of my grandchildren to be water safe. They are now starting classes with some very excellent instructors. I am enjoying watching them become confident in their skills and also having fun.

Three generations of my family have been benefiting from the services that the ASPA has provided and I am so thankful for that. I hope that you will consider renewing the lease so that families in Alameda can continue to benefit from this useful service.

Sincerely,
Eileen Mooningham

Dear Mayor Ashcraft, Vice Mayor Daysog, and Councilmembers Jensen, Herrera Spencer and Vella,
I write as a member of the Alameda Swimming Pool Association on behalf of my family and another family, the Quandt/El-Afifi's, who asked me to write on their behalf as they handle a a severe illness in the family.

I encourage you to renew the lease with ASPA. The pool and its volunteer-run association are an important element in Alameda's community.

I'm glad to see there are elements in the lease to increase access and equity to the pools for all Alamedans, and it seems there is new energy in the organization to improve the efficiency, communication, and openness to members and prospective members. I believe that this partnership between the city and the volunteer organization can provide an affordable, accessible swimming experience to the wide Alameda community.

Best,
Simon Pyle

Dear Mayor Ashcroft and City Council Members.

My name is Elizabeth Yosofzay-Mendoza and I live across the street from Franklin park and pool. My family has lived in our home since the 1940s and before the pool was even built. My mother learned to swim at this pool with the founders & creators Frank Weeden and Mr.Stolte. Not only did my mother learn to swim there but so did my sister ,daughter and myself. My sister and I swam on the alligators swim team . The pool has been a staple in my family. My nephew is 8 months old and I hope that he to will have the opportunity to learn to swim at Franklin Pool. So many of my neighbors share the same story as I.

Franklin pool was and has taught so many of our children in Alameda to swim including the free kingerswim classes that are so important. Kids learn how to be water safe, this is especially important as we live on a island. I'm sure the water safety lessons that they have learned has not only saved lives but also brought an appreciation to the physical excersize of swimming.

The pool is not just a place to swim it is a community. Isn't that what the city wants! We have a wonderful community of swimmers. I take great joy in hearing the families having fun at the pool and park.

Please think of the impact you will be making to our community when you are making decisions like renewing the lease.

We are alameda strong!
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Yosofzay-Mendoza

Dear Mayor and Council Members,
I am writing in support of the Alameda Swimming Pool Association (ASPA). My family of 4 kids has found tremendous value in being able to pay one annual membership to give us flexible access to the pool including daily lessons in the summer. As someone who did not learn to swim as a child, it has been a priority for me to make sure my kids are all water safe. The ASPA teachers, guards and volunteers have all done a wonderful job in providing a safe and effective system for teaching children to swim. It has been a financial and logistical lifesaver for my family, as we have found scheduling lessons with ARPD to be far too rigid and cost ineffective for our family.

Thank you so much for your consideration in renewing the lease to ASPA.

Thank you,
Laura Chinnavaso

Dear Alameda City Council,
I urge you to renew the lease for the Alameda Pool Association. I started swimming at Franklin pool during the pandemic - it was one of the few safe places to do the sort of exercise I need for my physical and mental health. We have a nice community and we pay and volunteer to keep it running.

Thank you for your consideration,

Hello,
I am writing as an Alameda resident who swims at Lincoln pool. I am writing to urge you to approve the lease for Lincoln and Franklin pools.

I'll be honest, if rec wants to take over the pools and staff them during the day so that anyone in the area has access to them, then I am all for it. But if the Alameda government can't provide this service, please don't shut these pools down. I know you plan to open a swim center in Jean Sweeny park and that's great. But we need to be able to swim now. Everyday.

I am in my 60's and need this pool for my health. There really is no other choice for me in Alameda. I cannot join a private club. I have bad feet and cannot do many other exercises. --
Best,
Deb

Dear Mayor and City Councilmembers,
I believe that the ASPA lease renewal in on the meeting agenda for tonight, and I simply wanted to voice my support for ASPA. Ever since moving to Alameda 5 years ago, my family has been benefiting from access to both Franklin and Lincoln pools via the ASPA.

We find the pools to be convenient, easily accessible, and well-maintained. It’s a fantastic alternative to private clubs like the Claremont or The Hills, which are both out of reach, financially, for our family.

I hope that you’re able to vote for the lease renewal in order to keep ASPA operating in Alameda.

Thank you,

Please vote in the affirmative to approve the lease negotiated between ASPA and City Of Alameda. In my view, it’s not perfect but it allows ASPA to continue its mission and service to the City of Alameda, which it has done for more than 50 years.

To Mayor and City Council Members:

The recently discussed Strategic Plan included approval of the agreement for the Lincoln and Franklin pools and the expansion of community access.

The Franklin Park pool is open to seniors two morning per week for one and one half hour each morning. That translates to one half hour per day and one hour per week to swim. Also there are always seniors waiting and sharing swim lanes.

I am a senior and a strong swimmer but am unable to qualify for Red Cross certification and so am unable to purchase an Alameda Swimming Pool Association membership.

I certainly do appreciate the use of the pool at Franklin Park. On behalf of myself and the senior swimmers in Alameda I write to request that the senior swim program be expanded.

Thank you.

Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council:

I want to thank City staff for their hard work in negotiating a new lease with the Alameda Swimming Pool Association (ASPA). I urge you to approve the lease.

Operation of the swimming pools at Franklin and Lincoln Parks by ASPA allows the City of Alameda to leverage public tax dollars. As an ASPA member, both my membership dues and my volunteer hours provide a much-needed resource for Alameda residents – two inviting, safe, clean, and healthy swimming pool facilities that serve a need more commonly met, in other cities, by local government.

For years I contributed the minimum number of volunteer hours required of ASPA members – serving as a guard for Family Swim sessions a total of 6 hours a year.

My family and I benefitted from the volunteer efforts of other members who not only served as guards but also maintained the plumbing and mechanical equipment, tested and balanced the water chemistry, cleaned the pools and the dressing rooms, took out the garbage and recycling, pruned the shrubs, watered the flowers, and taught hundreds of children to swim.

Now that I’m retired, I volunteer as the Thursday morning pool guard for Senior Swim sessions. I enjoy giving Alameda seniors an opportunity, free of charge, to exercise and socialize in a welcoming environment.

I urge you to authorize the City Manager to execute the lease agreement with ASPA.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Betsy Mathieson
