Subject: [EXTERNAL] Oppose AC Transit proposal to eliminate OAK airport service from Alameda Hello Mayor and Council
I am contacting you as an Alameda resident and constituent of the Bay Farm neighborhood to express my concerns regarding AC Transit’s current proposal to eliminate the only bus service route that directly connects the City of Alameda to Oakland airport. As you may be aware, the 21 bus line currently runs through the heart of Park Street and terminates at Oakland airport. However, under the proposed new route lines unveiled as part of AC Transit's “Realign Plan”, they are proposing to terminate the final leg of this existing route, thereby disconnecting our City from its only direct bus connection to Oakland airport.
As a result, a direct bus route to the airport that currently takes only minutes from Bay Farm would take over an hour under the new plan and would involve at least one or more transfers. Moreover, it directly contradicts a wide array of local, regional and statewide transportation and climate adaptation goals that seek to expand public transit access to regional transportation hubs, of which OAK airport is clearly a core element. Counterintuitively, AC Transit's 21 line promotional literature indicates the change will advance the agency's equity goals.
I have spoken to many neighbors and fellow residents here in Bay Farm and the east end of Alameda and virtually everyone I have spoken to agrees this proposal represents a significant disservice to Alameda residents. For these reasons I respectfully urge you to contact AC Transit's leadership and seek opportunities to revisit this ill-conceived proposal.
According to their program website (details below), there will be a public meeting on this topic later today (agenda item 7c) and on February 7th. Thanks for your consideration of this issue.
