Subject: Re: Working to Protect Whales and Sea Turtles- Resolution Inquiry Hello Councilmember Herrera Spencer,
Thanks again for giving me a call last week and providing some useful feedback to improve the resolution. I have updated the language with your feedback incorporated. I've included references to the Ocean cleanup project and plastic pollution reduction work that Alameda has done over the past few years.
Please let me know if you have any other edits that you would like to see incorporated and if there's anything that you need from me before moving things forward.
Thank you,
Ben Grundy

Subject: Working to Protect Whales and Sea Turtles- Resolution Inquiry Hello Councilmember Herrera Spencer,
My name is Ben Grundy, and I am an Oceans campaigner with the Center for Biological Diversity. While our office and my current residence is in Oakland, CA, I consider myself a proud former resident of Alameda and still find myself spending my free time at Robert Crown Memorial State Beach and exploring the local businesses on Webster and Park Street.
At the Center for Biological Diversity, my primary focus is protecting whales, sea turtles, and other vulnerable marine animals from entanglements in fishing gear and vessel strikes. I was saddened to learn that the gray whale that washed up near Robert Crown Memorial State Beach was struck by a vessel and likely caused the female whale’s death. I, like many other East Bay residents, believe that our state’s iconic marine wildlife should be able to feed, play, and navigate our coastal waters without being at risk of mortality and serious injury.
I’m reaching out to you in hopes of starting a dialogue around introducing a resolution that affirms Alameda’s belief in the safe passage of whales. I’ve attached a draft of the resolution and want to note that the draft resolution is based on a similar resolution approved by the Board of Supervisors of the City and County of San Francisco in 2014 (also attached to this email).
Please let me know if you have any questions, and if you’re interested in scheduling a time to discuss this more.
All the Best,
Ben Grundy
