Greetings City Council,
I am reaching out about the Stargell Avenue Complete Corridor Project. We live a block away on Coral Sea St in the Bayport neighborhood. My wife (Merina; cc’ed) and I have 2 young boys (Jalen and Angelo; 4 and 2 years old). Our community is full of young families with young children, so this has become a hot topic. Sharing a few comments:
Gratitude: Thank you for investing time, energy, and budget into the safety of our community.
Support: While we have some reservations, we support the project.
Requests: We do have a few asks for your consideration - Further Iteration: Is someone accountable to evaluate the results of this effort? If those results are not met and/or there are negative consequences, can someone be on point for figuring out a resolution plan? The traffic circle could be more treacherous than the status quo. To cross the street, a pedestrian has to rely on multiple drivers to stop (with no traffic light).
Gathering Feedback: Could we please set up some way for Bayport to engage in any initiatives in our surrounding area? We learned the City of Alameda hosted feedback meetings with neighboring communities. While we understand there may have been outreach to our HOA, Bayport residents did not have the opportunity to become aware of the project or provide feedback. I only learned about the project via the BikeWalkAlameda account on Instagram.
Speed Humps: Can speed humps be prioritized? I understand there is some work to address this in the future. Despite Coral Sea being in a residential area and a school zone, people race down the street daily. There was a death and there have been car accidents. Children walk across and ride their bikes on that street. It is a more significant concern to families than Stargell.
Recognition: Thank you to Susie Hufstader. She took the time to speak with us live, educated us on the project, and helped us become comfortable with it. Further, she made our first interaction with local government a delightful one.
Lastly, this is my first time contacting the City Council. Thank you for reading this and for your leadership.
