Good evening,
I'm Gabriel Duncan, founder of the Alameda Native History Project, and I'm here to update you on the ACORNS! Culinary Series, which celebrates traditional and contemporary California Indigenous cuisine.
This series has been made possible thanks to local businesses like Trader Joe's, Alameda Natural Grocery, and Night Heron Bread.
The acorns we've used were gathered during the First Annual Acorn Harvest last fall, which saw over 100 participants of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. We also received 60 pounds of acorns from Jerry, a 94 year-old Alameda resident who gathered them from a single tree on his property. Plus, we received another 20-30 pounds from Forest Home Farms Historic Park in San Ramon.
We're reopening Indigenous foodways by harvesting acorns and producing acorn flour as a community for the first time in over three hundred years. We've been processing acorns into flour at the Bay Area MakerFarm on Alameda Point, where we also have a Zero Waste Partnership with 100K Trees for Humanity.
The Second Annual Acorn Harvest begins this August, and we'd love for you to join us! You can sign up at https://acorns.nativehistoryproject.org.
At our first ACORNS! Culinary Series session, we made gluten-free vegan acorn cookies. At the second session, we made acorn flour crackers with fresh herbs and perfected the Chocolate Chip Acorn Cookie recipe. No crumbs were left.

This Friday, we'll be foraging with Chef Rosemary for native greens and veggies, which will be featured in our Rabbit with Mushroom Gravy dish this Sunday.
There are only two sessions left, with the final one on Sunday, April twenty-seventh. Space is limited-register at https://acorns.nativehistoryproject.org.
We'd like to send a huge thank you to Alameda Park and Rec for hosting us at the Mastick Senior Center, and to Councilwoman Tracy Jensen for attending our second session.
Thank you all for your continued supportwe're excited to share this moment in history with you.
Sincerely,
Sabriel Duncan
