Hello,
My name is Mark Showalter and I live at 1309 Sherman Street, less than a block away from the Mobil gas station.
I am a homeowner here since 1997.
This Mobil station is asking again for an expansion that I am completely opposed to.
The Mobil owners have asked before to expand and the neighborhood said no. Here we are again.
We do not need or want a gas station in our neighborhood. It really doesn’t fit in our neighborhood as it is. Now they want to expand hours. We do not need or want expanded hours of a gas station in our neighborhood. We don’t need a gas station in our neighborhood.
We certainly don’t need expanded hours for a gas station we don’t need or want in our neighborhood.
We do not need or want a convenience store at the gas station. There are several convenience stores already in the neighborhood that operate within their existing permit and offer all the hours we need. We do not need or want a convenience store at the gas station.
We don’t need more hours till 10pm or 8pm. I would prefer they just shut down and leave our neighborhood, but I am ok with them operating within their original permits. We do not want or need additional hours or a convenience store in our neighborhood.
Future expansion past midnight is ridiculous, and does not fit our neighborhood. We are all in bed before 10. This expansion would only bring more delivery trucks to our neighborhood, and worse, it will increase traffic in the evenings to a location that is now nice and peaceful.
If their business is unprofitable in the current situation, with their existing permits, then maybe they aren’t a profitable business? It makes no sense to allow the expansion of the Mobil gas station’s hours or add a convenience store.
I think you get the picture - we do not need or want the Mobil gas station to expand hours or add a convenience store.
Please let me know if any questions

7-A Honorable Council Members and Mayor,
Reading the Resolution and the Appeal letter, this decision is a balancing act due to expanding business operations and lengthening the operating times.
The Key: If the Resolution is passed, it is important for Mobil to recognize the impact on the neighborhood by being Respectful and a Great Neighbor.
If so, then each side will benefit.
Best Regards
Be Well

Subject: [EXTERNAL] Mobile Gas Station request to extend hours Date: Tuesday, September 2, 2025 1:43:34 PM
Dear Alameda City Council,
My name is Carter Chapman, and I live directly across the street at 1400 Sherman Street. I am writing in regard to Permit No. PLN24-0094, which would allow the Mobile gas station to extend its hours of operation.
I would like to express my support for granting the extended hours. The owners of the station have always been kind and respectful to me and my children, and I have found them to be good neighbors. While I understand that some of my fellow neighbors have concerns about later operating hours, I personally do not foresee the extended hours causing problems in our community.
My support, however, is based on the condition that the store is not permitted to sell tobacco, alcohol, or firearms. As long as the business remains focused on fuel and convenience items that align with community safety and well-being, I believe these extended hours could serve residents without negative impact.
Thank you for considering my perspective on this matter.
Sincerely,
Carter Chapman

Subject: [EXTERNAL] No Expanded hours at Mobile Gas station Date: Tuesday, September 2, 2025 12:51:05 PM
City Council of Alameda,
I am a neighbor and resident of Alameda living at 1309 Sherman Street for almost 30 years.
Please DO NOT approve the expanded hours and store for the Mobil station on the corner of Encinal, Central and Sherman. We already have a great locally run store (A-1 Market) nearby and do not need another market. This intersection is busy and difficult as is. My understanding is that there would be improvements on the flow of traffic with the addition of a round about through this intersection. Adding extra hours and a store would only make the flow of traffic worse and draw noise and traffic to our mostly quiet residential neighborhood. Going to Webster or Park street is close enough for the nearest gas station.
Please vote NO on this expansion.
Thank you for considering my input.
