Dear Mayor Ezzy Ashcraft and Members of the City Council, I understand that Alameda-specific e-bike regulations may be considered as part of the City’s 2026 Strategic Plan. I’m concerned that pursuing local regulations in this area could divert limited city resources and may unintentionally create barriers for residents who rely on e-bikes for everyday transportation, including riders like myself.

Instead, I encourage the City to support state-level efforts to address the root of current concerns such as Senate Bill 1167 and Assembly Bill 1557 around the marketing and sale of electric motorcycles as e-bikes.

I also hope the City will continue prioritizing Alameda’s Vision Zero Action Plan, which focuses on reducing traffic deaths and serious injuries on our streets, incidents that are overwhelmingly caused by motor vehicle crashes. Advancing proven safety measures through this plan will have a far greater impact on improving safety for everyone who uses Alameda’s streets.

Thank you for your time and for your service to our community.

Sincerely,
Michael Sullivan
