City Council Person, Bruce Smith
City Council Person, Bruce Sherrill
I am writing this letter to express my interest in serving as a City Council Person on the City Council of Amador City. It is my desire not just to enjoy living in Amador City but also to actively contribute in a meaningful way.
Since moving to Amador City in 2018, I have happily found myself gradually becoming drawn to and involved in city activities. I have been a docent at the Amador Whitney Museum since 2019 and was invited to be a member of the museum board in 2020, where I have served as recording secretary and as treasurer. In those roles, 1 have not only had the pleasure of greeting visitors to Amador City and introducing them to our city’s history but also gotten to know business owners in town, fellow residents and their families, and felt very much a part of the Amador City community whether it is walking backroads, attending ACBCA meetings to represent the museum, enjoying Wednesday evening music on the Imperial Inn patio from the hammock on my porch, enjoying a beverage (or two) at tasting rooms or the tavern, savoring food at Small Town and the Brewery Kitchen, shopping for small town treasures... or attending city council meetings, in person or remotely.
These connections to town and its businesses have piqued my Interest in how the city evolves yet retains its unique historical character; how civic activities draw people to our city who then become familiar with its small businesses. These connections have also highlighted the responsibilities that befall the City Council: health and safety of guests and residents; infrastructure; alignment with county governance; maintenance, upkeep and refinement of city structures and property; and, fiscal responsibility.
My vita accompanies this letter of interest and it highlights experience as an educator in public schools and state universities, as well as an appointee to local and state level workgroups and advisory committees. These opportunities highlight experience working in decision making groups, adhering to procedure, understanding background as it guides desired outcomes, and are experiences I can draw from as a city council person. Additionally, several of the positions I held were funded through state and federal grants. I bring experience in seeking funding t

opportunity announcements (FOAs), writing a grant, conducting a sunset review at the end of the grant cycle.
in retirement, my attention has become a little consolidated but more personally meaningful in many ways. Last year, my daughter-in-law and I completed three grants for special technology and arts programs for my grandson’s school - all three were funded. I do volunteer work 10-12 days a month at the Interfaith Food Bank for Amador County and am familiar on a first hand basis with the struggles with food insecurity not only In Amador County but here, in Amador City. I am a tenant and am fully aware of the benefits (no responsibility to repair the gutter) and worries (wondering if the rent will be raised and how much ...).
My professional background offers experience that generalizes to the work of governance; my current involvement in Amador City offers familiarity with business owners, fellow residents and their families, and with the array of visitors drawn to our city. And, I bring awareness of the broad spectrum of life in our small town—the points of contention for a few individuals, the plans for the future for others, the struggles for some, the generosity of many, the array of life styles and age ranges, all of whom the city council exists to serve.
I look foHA/ard to serving along-side you.
