Subject: [External] ARPA funding and Traffic Calming
Hello Mayor and Council
I am currently listening to the ongoing Council Meeting. I appreciate all of your diligence and hardwork on important topics before you. Regretfully, I am unable to remain in the meeting to provide my comment verbally on agenda item #12 as I see the discussion is still on agenda item #10. My apologies for providing this written comment so late. Hopefully it can still be used as input for future discussions regarding funding.
Cheers,
Tammy
Great to see traffic calming on Elliott, Melvin included in the proposal.
Our city is growing. It's no secret. Anyone who attends our city meetings regularly knows something like 8600 new units have been approved to be built in this next housing element cycle.
I've had discussions with many of you that our local streets were not designed for the level of traffic they currently support and will bear with all the new housing.
As a proud resident on the 500 block of Wetlands Edge Road, with the city's first speed cushions, I want to tell you how amazing they are. They really do slow down the speeders based on the preliminary data we have so far.
Full thanks to Public Works director Erica Smithies and Police & Fire Chiefs Greenberg and Cahill for their support of speed cushions. I also want to acknowledge the Council and your support these past three years in getting to this point.
You may have heard about a local petition by Julia Salvador that started circulating a few days ago: "Stop the Selfish Speeders -- Protect our Children, our Elderly& our Families".
I signed it, & so did 98 others who are concerned with traffic safety for those who live, work, and play in American Canyon.
What’s being asked for is funding set aside for traffic calming.
And that a permanent city commission, which includes residents, be established for traffic safety and traffic calming. And until that can be done, an ad hoc committee created.
So as you discuss how to best use the ARPA funds, and other funding sources the city has, please seriously remember the 99 individuals who have expressed interest in safe streets.
We need your support to create a pro-active process – that includes residents -- for traffic calming, and to fund it.
Let's set aside a portion of the ARPA funds for a lasting and meaningful addition to our city that benefits everyone: safe streets.
Until we can make physical changes to our roadways, they will remain speedways for the selfish drivers among us. Thank you.
