Good evening, Mayor, members of the City Council, and everyone here tonight.

My name is Shaun Gilbert, and I'm here tonight to talk about what is happening at American Canyon High School and how decisions by the Napa Valley Unified School District are affecting our students, families, and community.

I've been a resident of American Canyon for 18 years and have been involved in American Canyon youth sports for about 13 years. My kids have participated in Little League, AYSO soccer, and youth basketball, and I served on the American Canyon Little League Board for 11 years. I've seen firsthand how important our fields and facilities are to this community.

I'm not here asking the city to solve the school district's field project. I'm here to make sure you understand what is happening and how it is affecting American Canyon High School— and to ask for your help in making sure our community and our schools are treated fairly.

The high school field is used by football, band, flag football, soccer, cheer, track and field, and other youth programs. The district was made aware of concerns with the field last winter while soccer was using it. We raised those concerns again after spring practice in May and again when summer practices began in June.

Yet nothing was done until the end of August, which forced us to move one of our home games to another school.

At that point, we were under the impression that the field was safe and that no additional work would be needed during this season. Then, on September 28th, we were informed that the district would be closing the field after our October 16th homecoming game to redo the field.

That means our final home game is now being moved to Memorial Stadium in Napa.

This isn't just another football game. It's Senior Night—a night to recognize our senior football players, band members, and cheerleaders. These students deserve the opportunity to celebrate their final home game at their own school, in front of their families and community.

Because of the field situation, football has already lost two JV/ varsity home games and one freshman home game. Each home game brings in approximately $5,000 in gate and concession revenue. That's roughly $15,000 in lost revenue this season-money that helps support these programs.

We understand the district wants to replace the field and track. We understand there was a significant discount on the project and pressure to get the work started before the rainy season. But we also believe the way this has been handled has had a real and unnecessary impact on our students and our community.

There has been a lack of communication and transparency, and we have not received a clear explanation for why this project could not have been planned or started earlier, or why waiting just a few more weeks was not an option.

I'm here tonight simply to make sure you know what is happening.

We are asking for your support in holding the district accountable—not only for the lost revenue and opportunities our programs will not get back, but for the lack of communication and for decisions that have made American Canyon High School feel like an afterthought.

Our students deserve better, and our community deserves to have its voice heard.

Thank you for your time.
