CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
City of Anaheim
CITY MANAGER’S OFFICE
DATE: AUGUST 23, 2022
FROM: CITY MANAGER’S OFFICE
SUBJECT: DISCUSSION ON HOLDING A STATE OF THE CITY EVENT IN 2022
ATTACHMENT (Y/N): NO ITEM # 19
REQUESTED ACTION:
That the City Council, by Motion, discuss and approve holding a State of the City event in 2022.
DISCUSSION:
At the August 9, 2022 City Council meeting, Mayor Pro Tem Trevor O’Neil requested to agendize a discussion and approval to hold a State of the City event by the end of September or beginning of October of this year. This report incorporates the recommendations of Mayor Pro Tem O’Neil.
Every year, Anaheim’s mayor gathers with the community and business leaders to share Anaheim accomplishments and outlook for the future. Due to the mayoral vacancy, the State of the City was not held this year. If City Council is interested in bringing back the State of the City in 2022, the event would be entirely staff-driven. Such a city-sponsored State of the City is not unprecedented.
Location and Timing:
The event is proposed to take place at the City National Grove of Anaheim. Similar to past years, the event will be scheduled during lunch hours, potentially beginning at 11 a.m. for registration and check-in, with a 12 p.m. start for the program and luncheon.
Admission:
The event will be available to the public to purchase tickets to attend. Attendees will include residents, community stakeholders, board and commission members, non-profit organizations, faith-based organizations, business leaders, and legislative offices. In addition, 100 high school students from across Anaheim would be invited as complimentary guests of the city. Promotion and ticket logistics is proposed to be handled by city staff.
Ticket pricing will cover food and beverage costs with any potential proceeds directly benefitting the Anaheim Community Foundation (ACF), a 501(c)(3) public benefit corporation.
Discussion and Approval on Holding a State of the City Event in 2022 August 23, 2022
Program Content:
The City Manager would serve as the Master of Ceremonies. In addition, the City Manager will provide a general overview of the city of Anaheim, city goals and the city’s fiscal outlook. Council Members would each pre-record a staff scripted video, highlighting positive aspects of the city. The program will include performance(s) by local talent.
The following topics could be presented at this year’s event:
Development Updates
Public Safety Updates
Community Services and Programs
School Updates
Non Profits
Capital Projects
IMPACT ON BUDGET:
The City will look to recoup the State of the City food and beverage costs from the sale of tickets to the event. Sufficient funds are available in the City Administration Department Fiscal Year 2022/23 budget for production costs.
Respectfully submitted,
Jim Vanderpool
City Manager
