RECOMMENDATION:
That the District 2 City Council Member, through the nomination and appointment process, make appointments to certain City boards and commissions with terms that expired December 31, 2022.
DISCUSSION:
City boards and commissions (“commissions”) perform a valuable service to the City by providing a means by which the City Council can obtain the advice, opinions, and recommendations of City residents and other members of the community. At the November 8, 2022 General Municipal Election, the Mayor and Council Members representing Districts 2, 3, and 6 were elected, thereby requiring appointments to occur with the new election cycle. Each appointment is directly nominated by and serves a term concurrent with the nominating elected official, which is ratified by an affirmative majority vote of the City Council.
At the January 10, 2023 Council meeting, Mayor Ashleigh Aitken and District Council Members 2, 3, and 6 (Council Members Carlos Leon, Natalie Rubalcava, and Natalie Meeks, respectively) appointed members to several commissions and continued certain appointments to be appointed at a later date.
The following commissions are brought forward for direct appointment by District 2 Council Member Leon: i) Community Services Board; ii) Cultural and Heritage Commission; and iii) Parks and Recreation Commission.
Pursuant to Section 54972 of the Government Code, the Notice of Local Appointments was posted.
IMPACT ON BUDGET:
Funds to support the work of the Commissions are budgeted by the City Departments providing support and liaison.
