DearAnaheimCityCouncil,
OnJune13youwill consideranordinancewhichwoulddrasticallyimpacthotelsthroughouttheCityof Anaheim. WhilepromotedbyUNITEHERELocal11asameasureto increasehotelworkersafety, thispoorly draftedproposalcontainswageandworkrulesrequirementsthatwoulddevastateAnaheimhotels, withripple effectsthatwouldgutAnaheim’sbudget.
A majorityof thecouncilwascorrectto rejectoutrightadoptionatitsMay16meetingandinsteaddirectan economicimpactstudy. Weurgeadoptionto berejectedagain. Instead, theCityCouncilshouldplacethis matterontheballotfor thepeopletodecidein a specialelectionlaterthisyear.
Asamatterof policy, thehotelproposalwrittenbyUNITEHERELocal11wouldbeadisaster.
ImposingtheproposedwageandworkrulesonAnaheimhotelswouldbeacostlynewmandate. Manyworkers whoweresupposedto benefitwill likelyseetheirhoursreducedor theirjobseliminated. Largerhotelswill raisetheirpricesfor rooms, amenities, andservices, resultinginfewerhotelstaysandlesstaxrevenuefor the city. Theincreasedcostsof doingbusinessin Anaheimoverallwill makeit tougherfor Anaheimto attractandretain thebigtradeshowsandconventions, likeNAMMandNaturalProducts, andmakeit tougherfor familiesand touriststo justifythecostsof avacationto theAnaheimResort.

Weattendedtheeventatyourcenterwiththesameenthusiasm, hopingtowitnessan enjoyablecontestandsupportourteaminaconducive, respectful, andwelcomingenvironment. Regrettably, our experiencewasfarfromsatisfying.
Fromthemomentweenteredyourfacility, weweremetwithanunwelcomingatmospherethatwaspalpable throughoutourstay. Notably, thebehaviorofsomeofyourstaffmemberswasfarbelowthestandardswewouldexpect fromavenueofyouresteem. Thisbehaviorcreatedanuncomfortableenvironment, significantly dampeningourexperience.
Furthermore, manyofusfeltthatweweretreatedasif wewereaburdenoraninconvenience, insteadofrespected guestsatyourestablishment.
