WITH KABOOM! FOR LITTLE PEOPLE’S PARK
ATTACHMENT (Y/N): YES ITEM # 16
GOVERNMENT CODE § 84308 APPLIES: YES
RECOMMENDATION:

1. That the City Council, by Resolution, authorize the Community Services Director, or designee, to accept all grants from KABOOM! for the installation and maintenance of new playground equipment at Little People’s Park; and

DISCUSSION:

The city has been selected to receive a grant from KABOOM! for the installation of new playground equipment at Little People’s Park. The playground installation at Little People’s Park will be the city’s 17th KABOOM! project (attachment 3). Since 2011, play areas have been installed at the following parks: Barton, Center Greens, Cottonwood, Edison, Imperial, John Marshall, Julianna, Lincoln, Modjeska, Pearson, Peter Marshall, Rio Vista, Schweitzer, Stoddard, Twila Reid, and Willow. KABOOM! is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to create great play spaces through the participation and leadership of communities. The city will also collaborate with the Anaheim Family YMCA who has previously partnered on KABOOM! builds.

Little People’s Park is an approximately one-acre park located at 220 W. Elm Street with a play area that is 17 years old and is in much need of replacement. CarMax Foundation, the funding partner, will pay the majority of the cost of materials for the playground. The city will be responsible for aspects of the project, as specified in the Partner Agreement (attachment 2), including a contribution amount of $8,500 to KABOOM! towards the build.

A Design Day was held on Thursday, March 7, 2024, with children and adults from the community. The Build Day is scheduled for Thursday, May 16, 2024.
