CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
City of Anaheim
OFFICE OF THE CITY CLERK
DATE: MARCH 4, 2025
FROM: OFFICE OF THE CITY CLERK
SUBJECT: CONSIDER NAME CHANGE OF THE SENIOR CITIZEN
COMMISSION TO OLDER ADULTS COMMISSION AS
PROPOSED BY THE COMMISSION
ATTACHMENT (Y/N): YES ITEM # 17
GOVERNMENT CODE §84308 APPLIES: NO
RECOMMENDATION:
That the City Council, by Motion, change the name of the Senior Citizen Commission to Older Adults Commission as recommended by the Senior Citizen Commission, and if so desired direct staff to return with an Ordinance to codify the name change.
DISCUSSION:
In 1980, a seven-member Anaheim Senior Citizen Commission was established by the City Council as an advisory body to make recommendations to the City Council concerning the needs of senior citizens in the community. In 2010 the City Council voted to dissolve the Senior Citizen Commission, but later re-established the commission in 2017 to meet the needs of the community. The commission consists of seven members residing in the City of Anaheim who shall be 60 years and over.
At the Senior Citizen Commission meeting of October 17, 2024, the Commission voted to change the name of the Commission to “Older Adults Advisory Commission ” with a vote of 4-1; with an update to the name at the meeting of January 16 to “Older Adults Commission”. These recommendations were grounded in building better public perceptions of aging; “older adults” and “older person/people” are preferred terminology and utilized by the County of Orange. The recommendation to change the name of Senior Citizen Commission to Older Adults Commission is based on the appropriate terms for older adults.
Attached is the letter from Janet Brown, Chair of the Senior Citizen Commission, on behalf of the Commission recommending the name change be presented to the City Council for consideration. Upon direction from City Council, staff will return with an Ordinance to codify the name change.
IMPACT ON BUDGET:
There is no budgetary impact. Funds to support the work of the Boards and Commissions are budgeted by the City Departments providing support and liaison.
