DISCUSSION:
The city has been selected to receive a grant from KABOOM! for the installation of new playground equipment at Maxwell Park. The playground installation at Maxwell Park will be the city’s 18th KABOOM! project. Since 2011, play areas have been installed at the following parks: Barton, Center Greens, Cottonwood, Edison, Imperial, John Marshall, Julianna, Lincoln, Little People’s, Modjeska, Pearson, Peter Marshall, Rio Vista, Schweitzer, Stoddard, Twila Reid, and Willow. KABOOM! is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to create great play spaces through the participation and leadership of communities. The city will also collaborate with the adjacent Mattie Lou Maxwell Elementary School.
Maxwell Park is an approximately 25-acre park located at 2655 West Orange Avenue, next to Mattie Lou Maxwell Elementary School. Originally installed in 2005, the 20-year- old approximately 4,680 square foot play area is in need of replacement. The Anaheim Ducks Foundation, the funding partner, has committed $150,000 towards a portion of the cost for the new playground. The city will be responsible for aspects of the project, as specified in the Playspace Partner Agreement, including a contribution amount of up to $125,876 to KABOOM! towards the playground. The Agreement also identifies an allowance amount up to $10,000 for equipment upgrades, only if requested by the city.
