HiEveryone,
SteveDrummond here, senioreditorontheteam, withanupdate ononeofour favorite topics: thepostsecondary pushforalternatives tothetraditional fouryeardegree.

Rightnow, itseems likeeveryone’stalkingaboutapprenticeships asapathtoa high-payingjobwithout takingonalotofstudent debt. ButastheHechinger Report’sJonMarcus reported forusthisweek, there’sacatch: Therearen’t nearlyenough employers offering apprenticeships rightnowtomeetthe demand forthem. That’smaking itdifficulttofillthesurplusofwell-paying trade jobsthatarecurrently sitting empty.

AsJonreports, there’sgoodreason fortheallthebuzz:

Apprenticeships combine paidon-the-jobtraining withclassroom time.

Increasing theirusehasbipartisan support andwasararesubjectofagreement between thepresidential candidates intherecentelection.

They'vealsobenefited fromgrowing public skepticism abouttheneedfor college: Only1in4adults nowsaysafour-yeardegree isextremely orvery important togetagoodjob, thePewResearch Centerfinds. Andnearly twothirdsof14- to18-year-oldssaytheiridealeducation wouldinvolve learning skillsonthejob, asinapprenticeships, according toasurveybytheECMC Group.

According totheU.S. Department ofLabor, therearemorethan680,000 students inapprenticeship programs rightnow, andthatnumberisgrowing fast.

We’vedonealotofreporting recently inthepushfordifferent careerpathsout ofhighschool, andthisstoryreminds meofoneofourmostpopular storiesof 2 alltime, alsofromJonMarcusandtheHechingerReport, abouthowsomany well-payingtradejobsaregoingunfilled.

Whenwefirstpublishedthatstoryin2018, itgotmillionsofpageviews, andin theyearssincesomanypeoplewerestillreadingitthatJonupdateditforus lastyear.

Here’sabitofwhatthatreportingfound:

Whileashortageofworkerspusheswageshigherintheskilledtrades, the financialreturnfromabachelor'sdegreeissoftening, evenastheprice, andthe averagedebtintowhichitplungesstudents, remainhigh.

Buthighschoolgraduateshavebeensoeffectivelyencouragedtogeta bachelor'sthathigh-paidjobsrequiringshorterandlessexpensivetrainingare goingunfilled. Thisaffectsthosestudentsandalsoposesarealthreattothe economy
Whichalsoexplainswhythere’ssuchgreatdemandrightnowfor
apprenticeships. And, asthisweek’sstorynotes, they’reoftenagood investmentforemployers:

Infact, 94percentofapprenticesstaywiththeiremployerswhenthey'refinished withtheirprograms, accordingtotheLaborDepartment. Andforeverydollar investedinanapprenticeship, anemployerrealizesanaveragereturnof $1.44, theUrbanInstitutefound.

Andyetthedisconnectbetweenthenumberofemployersoffering
apprenticeships, andthemuchlargernumberofstudentsseekingone, remains.
