SUBJECT: APPOINTMENT TO THE SISTER CITY COMMISSION
(AT-LARGE, EDUCATIONAL SECTOR)
ATTACHMENT (Y/N): NO ITEM # 05
GOVERNMENT CODE § 84308 APPLIES: NO
RECOMMENDATION:
That the City Council, by Motion, approve the appointment of Jennifer Sasai to the Sister City Commission representing the Educational Sector, with a term ending December 31, 2028.
DISCUSSION:
City boards and commissions (“commissions”) perform a valuable service to the City by providing a means by which the City Council can obtain the advice, opinions, and recommendations of City residents and other members of the community. The Sister City Commission is appointed by and acts as an advisory body to the City Council and responsible for the growth and development of its sister cities Mito, Japan and Vitoria- Gasteiz, Spain. The commission works year round to develop Anaheim’s cultural exchange opportunities, economic development and exploration of future sister cities.
The Sister City Commission consists of fifteen (15) members. The Mayor and each City Councilmember directly appoint one member to the Commission. The remaining eight (8) members are at-large members with two (2) members representing the educational sector members. These remaining members are recommended by staff and members of the Sister City Commission. Jennifer Sasai is recommended for appointment to the Sister City Commission representing the Educational Sector, with a term ending December 31, 2028.
Ms. Sasai is a Principal in the Anaheim Union High School District, who has previously chaperoned the Mito, Japan trip and hosted inbound groups. As a Principal, Ms. Sasai has a unique educational perspective that would benefit the Sister City exchange program.
Pursuant to Sections 54972 of the Government Code, the Local Appointments List was posted.
IMPACT ON BUDGET:
Funds to support the work of the Boards and Commissions are budgeted by the City Departments providing support and liaison.
