CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
City of Anaheim

COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT
DATE: APRIL 22, 2025
FROM: COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT
SUBJECT: GIRLS IN GOVERNMENT EVENT
ATTACHMENT (Y/N): NO ITEM # 20
GOVERNMENT CODE § 84308 APPLIES: NO
REQUESTED ACTION:

That the City Council, by Motion, establish the Girls in Government Event as a city-led initiative to provide girls with an engaging, hands-on opportunity to explore leadership, governance, and civic involvement; and authorize the City Manager, or designees, to take the necessary actions to implement and administer the event.

DISCUSSION:

At the Council meeting on March 25, 2025, Council Member Rubalcava requested an agenda item to discuss having the Girls in Government event be a city-led initiative after a successful event in 2024 and with a super majority female Council and Mayor. The half- day event is designed to inspire the next generation of female leaders by immersing them in the workings of government and showcasing the experiences, challenges, and successes of women in leadership roles.

The Girls in Government event last year featured and will continue to offer a variety of program components designed to inspire and empower young women such as:
 Networking Opportunities - Participants will have dedicated time to connect with peers, women department leaders, and elected officials, allowing them to build relationships, exchange ideas, and form mentorship connections.  Take Professional Headshots - A photographer will be on-site to provide each attendee with a complimentary headshot, giving them a valuable tool for future professional and academic endeavors.
 Women in Political Government Panel - Elected female officials will discuss their paths to leadership, the responsibilities of serving in government, and how they work to create change at the policy level.
 Breakout Workshops - Interactive workshops that focus on building leadership skills, prepping and acing interviews, and financial literacy.

If approved, staff will begin work on planning this year’s Girls in Government event to be held in Fall 2025.

IMPACT ON BUDGET:

Introduction of a new Girls in Government event will require increased staffing to coordinate and host the event. The department will make adjustments to existing programs as necessary to accommodate this new event and manage additional costs within their current budget. Costs may be offset in part by donations from local businesses and donors through the Anaheim Community Foundation.

Respectfully submitted,
Sjany Larson-Cash
Community Services Director
