Subject: DeerCanyonApartmentProject
DearAnaheimCityCouncil,
I amwritingtoexpressmyurgentconcernsregardingtheproposed498-unitDeerCanyonapartmentcomplex inAnaheimHills. WhileI recognizetheneedtoaddressSouthernCalifornia’s housingchallenges, this particulardevelopmentonthe76-acrewildernessareaoffSantaAnaCanyonRoadraisesseveralcritical issuesthatwouldnegativelyimpactourcommunityandenvironment.

1. IncreasedTraffic, Noise, andPollution: Theproposeddevelopmentwouldsignificantlyincreasetrafficon SantaAnaCanyonRoad, directlyaffectingfamilieswholivealongorneartheroute. Currently, thenoiseand smogfromthenearby91Freewayalreadyimpactresidents, andthisadditionaltrafficburdenwouldexacerbate theissue, diminishingourcommunity’s qualityoflife. Ourneighborhoodscannotenduretheworsening conditionsthatthisdevelopmentwouldimpose.

2. DestructionofLocalWildlifeHabitat: TheDeerCanyonareaishometovariouswildlifespecies, whose habitatswouldbedestroyedbythisspeculativeproject. Thisnaturalareaservesasa vitalsanctuaryforthese species, andtheproposeddevelopmentwouldresultintheirreversiblelossofbiodiversityanddisruptthe ecologicalbalanceoftheregion.

3. LossofVegetationBenefitingAirQuality: ThevegetationinDeerCanyonplaysanessentialroleinfiltering theair, helpingmitigatesmogfromthe91Freeway. Whenfreewaycongestionincreases, manyvehicles, includingheavytrucks, exitonImperialHighwayandtakethewindingroutethroughourareatobypasstraffic, addingevenmorepollution. Removingthisvegetationwouldhavedirect, adverseeffectsonairqualityfor AnaheimHillsresidents.

4. IncreasedSafetyRisksina High-RiskZone: Addingnearly500unitsinAnaheimHillsraisesserioussafety concerns. OurareasitsneartheSanAndreasFault, increasingtheriskofstructuralfailureandsignificant dangerduringearthquakes.

Additionally, AnaheimHillsisathighriskforwildfires, andtheincreasedpopulationdensitywouldcomplicate evacuationduringemergencies, puttinglivesatrisk! Developingina high-riskarealikethisissimplynot prudent, asit wouldlikelyresultincomplexandpotentiallyhazardousevacuationscenarios Inlightoftheseconcerns, I urgetheCityCounciltoreconsidertheDeerCanyonapartmentproject. Thelong- termimpactsontraffic, environmentalstability, airquality, andresidentsafetyinAnaheimHillsshouldbe prioritizedoverspeculativerealestateinterests. Ratherthancontributetooverdevelopmentina sensitivearea, I hopetheCouncilwillfocusonsustainable, well-consideredsolutionsthatgenuinelyaddressthehousingcrisis withoutcompromisingtheintegrityofourcommunity.

A note fromChris:
4 Recently, I askedmy son, who is13, to get out of the housefor somefresh air. So, while I wasout runningerrands, he took off on hisbike.

Welive in the countryand there’sa path to oursmall, ruraltown, soI figured that’swhere he went, but he didn’t take hisGabb phone with him, soI wasn’t sure.

I had no idea wherehe was. And I startedto worry.

Then2 thoughtshit me.

Thought #1 was “Wait - thisiswhat parentingin the 1980swaslikeall summer. My parentshad a general idea of where I was - at the park, or at Mark’shousedown the road. And that was enough!"
Then, thought #2 was, “Whatif all thistracking and tech and algorithm- drivenbad newshave conditioned me to worry?”
BOOM. I’ve been groomed to know exactly wherehe is. And whenI don’t, I’ve been conditioned to worry. Weall have.

Now he’sa good kid. Heknowshow to get home. HavinghisGabb phone with him wouldn’t stopanyone from kidnapping him.

So, yeah, we’re the oneswho worry - a lot. Wefight againstphone-free schoolpoliciesbecause of mostlyillogical things. Likesafetyduringan active shootersituation, which doesn’t make sense. Likeneeding to pepper our kidswith textsall day. Whichactually contributesto theiranxiety.

It’sus. It’sus. It’sus!
Now he made it home justfine. WillI have him take hisphone when he takesthe nextbike ride? Youbet. Therearen’t pay phoneson corners anymoreif he needssomething. Butmy big realizationisthat when he'sout, I need to check less.

Parentingwith you,
