RECOMMENDATION:
That the District 1 City Council Member, through the nomination and appointment process, make an appointment to the Cultural and Heritage Commission with a term ending December 31, 2028.
DISCUSSION:
City boards and commissions (“commissions”) perform a valuable service to the City by providing a means by which the City Council can obtain the advice, opinions, and recommendations of City residents and other members of the community. At the November 5, 2024 General Municipal Election, Council Members representing Districts 1, 4, and 5 were elected, thereby requiring appointments to occur with the new election cycle. Each appointment is directly nominated by and serves a term concurrent with the nominating elected official, which is ratified by an affirmative majority vote of the City Council.
At the January 14, 2025 Council meeting, District 1, 4 and 5 Council Members appointed members to several boards and commissions, with District 1 and 5 Council Members continuing certain appointments to be appointed at a later date. District 1 Council Member Ryan Balius is prepared to make an appointment to the Cultural and Heritage Commission with a term ending December 31, 2028.
The Cultural and Heritage Commission acts as an advisory body to the City Council on matters concerning the arts, culture, and historic preservation and heritage.
Pursuant to Section 54972 of the Government Code, the Notice of Local Appointments was posted.
IMPACT ON BUDGET:
Funds to support the work of the Boards and Commissions are budgeted by the City Departments providing support and liaison.
