The California Department of Justice has approved the city’s application for funding under the FY 2025 Tobacco Grant Program in the amount of $554,556. This grant provides funding to cover overtime costs for police officers to decrease underage youth access to tobacco products, whether it’s legal or illegal. The program will encompass a wide range of strategies including inspections, enforcement, and education on prevention strategies to make a positive impact on the community. There is also an educational component that will allow investigators to educate smoke shop owners and employees on the importance of complying with state law.

IMPACT ON BUDGET:

FY 2025/26 revenue and expenditure appropriations will be increased by $554,556 in the Police Department’s Restricted Law Enforcement Grant Fund. Future fiscal year appropriations will be subject to Council approval of budget appropriations. There is no local match requirement.
