Across the country, we asked teachers if their community had safe biking routes to and from school— and whether the All Kids Bike program has helped spark improvements. The responses paint a clear picture of how this program is influencing not just students, but the safety of the routes they ride.
Are there safe biking routes to and from school? Has the All Kids Bike Program led to any improvements or advocacy for safer biking infrastructu re in your area? ” Yes, by providing bikes and teaching safety in school, the program has helped promote safer biking practices and increased awareness. It has also contributed to advocacy efforts for improved biking infrastructure within the community."
Lashona Riche tta , Toome r Elementary, Atlanta GA
Yes, as we speak the city of Cohasset is putting in sidewalks that connect from a busy road that goes toward the scho ol, with a cross walk to get to the other side of street where the schoo l sidewalk is, alo ng with a lighted crosswalk."
Anne Campbe ll, Gra nd Rapids Schools, Minne sot a
I’ve wo rked with Safe Routes to School and got older kids bikes before I had these striders. A lso threw those grants I got a couple trails and there is a
4 mile trail as well on the edge of town."
Susan Carne y, Arlee Eleme ntary, Arlee , MT
These insigh ts show that when kids learn to ride, it can ignite a movement—one that rallies communities to create safer, more bike- friendly routes for everyone.
And it’s all possible because of supporters like you.

Subje ct: Le gislative Le aps and Bounds: Global Guardrai ls Are Taking Shape— and Parents Lead the Way The push to reform Section 230 inWashington, D.Cwith [from L to R]: Dani Pinter, Kristin Bride, JosephGordon-Levitt, Julie Scelfo, SC Rep. Brandon Guffey, andSarahO’Quinn
Dear CRAIG,
The movement to hold Big Tec h ac countable for how their products harm our children is a global one. And all across the world, policymakers are increasingly stepping up to put guardrails on social media and other addictive tech.
In a watershed moment, Spain has just become the first European country to propose banning soc ial media for kids under 16, and the Spanish government is also devising a plan to hold social media companies liable for illegal, hateful or harmful content on their platforms.
At the same time, the European Union is demanding changes to TikTok’ s addic tive design, stating that its endless scroll and other features violate EU law for online safety and pose potential harm to the " phy sical and mental well- being” of kids and other users.
At MAMA, we are determined to ensure that our politicians here in the U.S. follow these global examples and take swift, meaningful action to protect kids.
Last week, I was proud to join survivor parents, including Kristin Bride of Parents Rise!, along with the Center on Countering Digital Hate, Issue One, the National Center on Sexual Exploitation ( NCOSE) and ac tor and advocate ( and dad) Joseph Gordon- Levitt in Washington, D.C. to push for reforms to Section 230. This outdated policy shields soc ial media companies from legal responsibility for harmful content promoted on their platforms, enabling major tec h companies to avoid liability even when their produc ts cause unthinkable suffering.
At a press conferenc e led by Sen. Dick Durbin, several parents spoke movingly about the children they have lost to soc ial media. That included Kristin, whose son Carson died by suicide after he experienc ed intense cyberbullying, as well as Bridgette Noring, who tragic ally lost her son to fentany l poisoning after he encountered a drug dealer on Snapc hat.
Let’s continue to take these inc redible parent activists as inspiration, a deeply powerful reminder of why we are all in this fight.
Not backing down,
Julie
Updates from MAMA HQ
WE DID IT!! Last week, South Carolina Governor Henry Mc Master signed the Age- Appropriate Design Code into law, establishing that social media companies have a clear duty of care” to protec t kids from harmful content on their platforms, while also requiring these companies to responsibly handle minors’ personal data, rein in addic tive features, and stop targeting kids with surveillance advertising.
Passage of this bill was a two- year effort for MAMA in the face of relentless opposition from Big Tech, and the tech giants aren’ t done fighting yet. One of the major tech lobby ing groups has already filed a lawsuit to challenge this critically important legislation.
We thank Gov. McMaster, State Rep. Brandon Guffey, our Fort Mill Chapter Leader Kimberly Long and all our advoc acy partners for helping us protec t our kids and for staying in the fight against media addiction! And special thanks to all South Carolina MAMA community members who helped make this victory happen by ensuring our voices were heard.
In Nebraska, state senators have introduced new legislation that would create safeguards to protect minors from the growing threats of AI.The proposed legislation would require companies to clearly disc lose when a user is communicating with a chatbot and not a real person, prohibit these companies from instituting a reward system for continuous use, and prevent AI chatbots from generating any sexually explicit content or interactions. Our Omaha MAMA Chapter Leader Michele Neily ( above) testified in support of the bill and shared her concerns about how kids are becoming increasingly reliant on AI technology :
Two in three teens use AI chatbots, and 12% have turned to them for emotional or mental health support."

ON TRIAL Meta executive Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagr am, is set to take the stand today as the world’ s biggest social media companies face a landmark trial in Los Angeles seeking to hold them responsible for harms to children who used their platforms. A lawyer for the plaintiffs called the case as “ easy as ABC… addicting the brains of children.” He also shared communication of Meta employees discussing how Instagram is “like a drug” and that employ ees are “ basically pushers.” Additional internal doc uments revealed that a Meta researcher warned in 2020 that 500, 000 kids a day were being targeted by ‘creeps’ on Fac ebook and Instagram. A similar trial is underway in New Mexico foc used on whether Meta misrepresented the safety of its platforms when it comes to the dangers of child sexual exploitation.
LEADERSHIP In the wake of landmark social media trials, we are starting to see more political candidates standing up to Big Tech and supporting policies that would protec t kids.
And no surprise - it’s starting with moms. Michigan State Sen. Mallor y McMor row, a candidate for U.S. Senate, ( whose bio includes the description “ Noa' s mom”) just rolled out a new set of proposals designed to take action on kids’ online safety and put safeguards on AI, which she explains in this video.
VULNERABLE More than 1 in 3 teen boys report gambling in the last year, and nearly 60% of them say the content “ just started showing up” on their social media algorithms.
Tim Daly, a longtime education expert who writes the EdDaly substack, warns that legalized and heavily marketed gambling is quietly becoming a major threat to teens— especially boys. USA Today investigative reporter Nick Penzenstadler spoke with The Excerpt podcast about how regulators are doing little to nothing to stop it.
CAUTION In a conversation with ABC News about AI technology , Anthr opic co-founder Daniela Amodei expressed concerns about the risks of AI for her children and other kids, acknowledging that “ we still have a lot of work to do” to mitigate AI’s potential harms.
Amodei also explained the need for caution in how kids interac t with AI, noting that Anthropic does not allow users under 18 to interact with its chatbot.
UNHEALTHY Is overrelianc e on technology causing students to miss the most important parts of growing up? Clay Shirky, New York University’ s Vice Provost for AI and Tec hnology in Educ ation say s they might be in an important guest essay for The New York Times. AI’s constant praise trains users for validation over connection, contributing to what sociologists call social deskilling.
DISTRACTED Even film students are struggling to sit through full movies. This eye- opening piec e from The Atlantic shows how the attention economy and nonstop scrolling are reshaping young people’ s ability to focus, learn, and engage with the world around them.
BREAKUP As governments and individuals alike grow wary of U.S. tech company power, countries such as Franc e, India, and South Korea are pushing for “ tec h sovereignty” by enc ouraging users to stay away from U.S. platforms, and promoting apps and social media websites developed within their own countries. In these locations, alternatives to Silicon Valley platforms are suddenly gaining real momentum.
SAFETY A new report from Common Sense Media reveals that a strong majority of U.S. adults are now in favor of stric t age restrictions and privacy protections for social media and AI, driven by concerns that these platforms are " not meant for children" and that current age- verification tools are too easy to bypass.
PEACE A group of Buddhist monks concluded their 2,300 mile walk for peace across the U.S. yesterday , arriving in Washington, D.C. and delivering remarks. One of the monks had an urgent message. “ Please don’ t touch your phone when you wake up in the morning. This is a must. This is way to train yourself. Every time when you touch your phone, your mind starts wandering… Instead, make your bed, nice and neat. Go to the bathroom - still no phone. Do your thing. Come out. Get a piece of paper and a pen. Write out the statement ‘ today is going to be my peaceful day.’.. when your han[d] pairs with the mind, it makes a big difference.”

LOS ANGELES ( AP) — Adam Mosseri, the head of Meta’ s Instagram, testified Wednesday during a landmark social medi a trial in Los Angeles that he disagrees with the idea that people can be clinically addicted to social media platforms.

Meta Platforms and Google’s YouTube are the two remaining defendants in the case, which TikTok and Snap have settled.
At the core of the Los Angeles case is a 20-year-old identified only by the initials “KGM,” whose lawsuit could determine how thousands of similar lawsuits against social media companies would play out. She and two other plaintiffs have been selected for bellwether trials — essentially test cases for both sides to see how their arguments play out before a jury.
Mosseri said it’s important to differentiate between clinical addiction and what he called problemati c use. The plaintiff’s lawyer, however, presented quotes directly from Mosseri in a podcast interview a few years ago where he said the opposite, but he clarified that he was probably using the term “too casually,” as people tend to do.
Mosseri said he was not claiming to be a medical expert when questioned about his qualificati ons to comment on the legitimacy of social media addiction, but said someone “ very close” to him has experienced serious clinical addiction, which is why he said he was “being careful with my words.”

He said he and his colleagues use the term “problematic use” to refer to “someone spending more time on Instagram than they feel good about, and that definitely happens.”
It’s “not good for the company, over the long run, to make decisions that profit for us but are poor for people’s wellbeing,” Mosseri said.
Late NFL star Pat Tillman’ s brother pleads guilty to setting fire at California post officeWatch More Mosseri and the plaintiff’s lawyer, Mark Lanier, engaged in a lengthy back-and-forth about cosmetic filters on Instagram that changed people’ s appearance in a way that seemed to promote plastic surgery.
We are trying to be as safe as possible but also censor as little as possible,” Mosseri said.
In the courtroom, bereaved parents of children who have had social media struggles seemed visibly upset during a discussi on around body dysmorphia and cosmetic filters. Meta shut down all third-party augmented reality filters in January 2025. The judge made an announcement to members of the public on Wednesday after the displays of emotion, remindi ng them not to make any indication of agreement or disagreement with testimony, saying that it would be “improper to indicate some position.” In recent years, Instagram has added a slew of features and tools it says have made the platform safer for young people. But this does not always work. A report last year, for instance, found that teen accounts researchers created were recommended ageinappropriate sexual content, including “graphic sexual descriptions, the use of cartoons to describe demeaning sexual acts, and brief displays of nudity.”
In addition, Instagram also recommended a “range of self-harm, self-injury, and body image content” on teen accounts that the report says “would be reasonably likely to result in adverse impacts for young people, includi ng teenagers experi encing poor mental health, or self-harm and suicidal ideation and behaviors.” Meta called the report “misleading, dangerously speculati ve” and said it misrepresents its efforts on teen safety.
Meta is also facing a separate trial in New Mexico that began this week.

Behind the Crowd: See What Others Miss at Big Games
Thousands of people gather for big events like the Super Bowl and World Cup. That means more eyes watching— and more chances to spot the signs of trafficking.
Human trafficking doesn’ t always look like what you’ve seen in movies. It’s happening around you right now in the hotel down the street, at the restaurant where you ate lunch, even near the stadium where you’re cheering.
You have the power to spot the real warning signs. You can be the voice that breaks the silence. Together, we can help protect people who desperately need it by reporting what we see.
LINK TO WEBSITE
Million Kids Insights: Please know that each one of us has to speak up if we see something suspicious and not just at the big game but in our neighborhoods. Even if we don't have proof. By identifying and reporting suspected human trafficking, you are doing your part to help law enforcement recover victims.
This comes directly from the DHS website:
Law enforcement can connect survivors of human trafficking to services such as medical and mental health care, shelters, job training, and legal assistance that restore their freedom and dignity. The public’ s vigilance to report human trafficking is a vital line of defense against this heinous crime.
What to Report:
WHO you saw.
WHAT you saw.
WHEN you saw it.
WHERE it occurred.
WHY it is suspicious.
No tip is insignificant. If a situation gives you pause, trust your instincts. The presence or absence of any of the indicators is not necessarily proof of human trafficking. It is up to law enforcement to investigate suspected cases and make the determination. Factors such as race, ethnicity, gender, and/or religious affiliation are not indicators of suspicious behavior.

Dad claims 16-year-old daughter took her own life after meeting a predator on Roblox, slams game platform
beloved by kids
Penelope Sokolowski was just 16 years old when she took her own life last February.
Her father, Jason, believes her suicide was the culmination of a grooming process that began on Roblox, the game platform beloved by kids — with some 170,000 users under the age of 13, according to company data from 2023.
We kind of thought we were covering all the bases,” Jason told The Post, noting that his family had used a third- party app to monitor Penelope’ s online activity.
Jason alleges that his only child was contacted by a predator on Roblox who coerced her into cutting his name into her chest and sending videos of herself bloodied from self- harm — and who, ultimately, sent Penelope down a spiral that culminated in her death.

Million Kids Insights: Matt Dolman’ s firm, an attorney for a plaintiff, is aware of at least 119 lawsuits filed against Roblox since 2025. The cases, which span 34 states, include a shocking array of predatory behavior.
What many parents don't understand about Roblox is that it is a game creation platform and hosts games which can be created by anyone including kids and teens, hobbyists, professionals, companies creating branded events and even predators. There are millions of individual games on Roblox and only a very small fraction are made by Roblox. Most importantly, there is no vetting or approval process before a game goes live. A creator can publish instantly and the content can be unsafe for children.
Because anyone can create a game and publish it instantly, parents should know:
Quality varies between games.
Safety is not required.
Some games include unmoderated chat, private servers, or loopholes.
Predators can join games to contact kids ( especially those with unmoderated chat).
This is why parents should vet each individual game, not assume that “ Roblox” as a whole is safe. They should also be checking their child' s chats or messaging, know who they are interacting with and what games they are playing.
Washington County schools implement Proxyware to
detect predators and scammers online
Washington County, Virginia, Public Schools are using a new system called Proxyware, CEO of the Virginia- based company Chris Olson tells News 5's Yannia Nordelo it helps detect online predators and scammers targeting students.
We protect children by detecting and disrupting digital harms that reach them through social media websites and apps, said Olson.
Olson says online danger doesn' t always look obvious.

Million Kids Insights: Your seven year old is using their school provided laptop for tutoring. The tutor is using a cartoon filter that glitches to reveal that the tutor is naked. A 10-year- old is groomed online for weeks by a predator through their school provided Chromebook until the parent discovers the messages. Both of these are real cases.
School provided laptops are not inherently safe from scammers or predators. They can be safer than a personal device, but only if the school configures and monitors them well, and unfortunately many don’t or can't. The evidence shows that predators and exploitative networks absolutely reach kids through school devices, even when filters are in place.
On many school devices, the protection and security blocks inappropriate websites.
But predators don' t usually use websites to contact kids. They will use email, chat features inside educational platforms, gaming platforms accessible through the browser, Discord like clones or lesser known messaging tools, social media sites that slip past filters and anonymous or encrypted apps that don’t require installation.
Predators also exploit the fact that kids assume that the school laptop is safe.
Law enforcement warns that predators do not stop because a child is “in school.” Kids may be targeted just as easily during school hours as they might be during the off school hours. The FBI also reports a major rise in sextortion and grooming attempts across platforms commonly used by students.
School devices reduce some risks ( malware, unsafe downloads) but do not protect against human predators, grooming, or sextortion. The safest approach for any parent is to treat school laptops exactly like any other internet connected device:
Regularly check browser history, email, and messaging tools Keep the device in shared spaces at home and turned off at night Ask your child who they talk to online and why
Set clear rules about communication with strangers
Teach them to report anything uncomfortable immediately Parents should also be asking the school what monitoring tools they use and whether those rules apply off campus. And finally, the school should be transparent with parents about third party apps, tutors, and communication channels being used.

Who is teaching kids how to safely browse social

Starting in early January, HRHS students in grades 10

Technology is not to be feared but to be understood. To know the way it can be used for good, but to also understand the risks and dangers.
The following is taken from Opal' s new book Digital Warfare : Our Kids on the Frontline -
To be successful, the less of a technology information gap there needs to be between the generations. The better you can have discussions about how and where young people can become leaders for the next generation. Fortunately, most younger parents today grew up using technology, but the older people are still living in a world of Facebook and FreeCell. For young people to take you seriously, you have to have an understanding of the world they live in.
This generation of young people cannot afford to be naïve and gullible and easy to influence. They will be interacting ( online) with millions of people they have never met, and some of those people will want to access, groom, seduce and recruit our young people. Others will want to indoctrinate or radicalize them and tell them endless untruths to get them to engage in criminal or political activities that might be harmful.
Being a parent today may be one of the greatest and toughest callings of all time.
Every day, our team sees stories of innocent young people drawn into things their parents never imagined. It’s up to parents, teachers, coaches, and mentors to guide kids to become strong, grounded leaders with healthy values in a complex and fastchanging world.

Authorities in Virginia say a Roanoke business is part of an ongoing investigation about possible ties to prostitution and human trafficking. Prosecutors say the bridal store, Amanda’ s Touch, was used as a “front” for such crimes.
According to the Virginia State Police, investigators discovered the defendants were dealing drugs in several locations between Rockbridge and Floyd counties. The group then used that money to fuel the human trafficking operation.
There is evidence to show drugs, money and coercion were being used to control these victims, to coerce them into prostitution and human trafficking,” Floyd County Commonwealth’ s Attorney Eric Branscom said.

Norway' s Police 2Pe er CSAM Proje ct - Liv e Map of People looking for Child Sex Abuse Mate rials
The Police2Peer project works to protect children from abuse by raising awareness about how much abusive material is shared online and by making it more difficult to access real images and videos of abuse.
The project, which has been running since 2017, uploads files to file sharing networks Peer2Peer/ P2P) with names that resemble real child sexual abuse material. This is done to show how easy it is to find and share such content on these networks.
For someone searching for abusive material on these networks, the files appear genuine because of their filenames. The actual content of the files only becomes visible after they are downloaded and played on the user’ s device.
In reality, these files contain videos and images with information from the police. The purpose is to inform users about the risks they are taking and the legal consequences of downloading or distributing abusive material – and to increase the perceived risk of detection.

The trial will introduce evidence that Raúl Torrez, the state’ s attorney general, believes shows how Meta’ s social networks create dangerous environments for children, exposing them to sexual exploitation, solicitation, sextortion and human trafficking.

Dear Mayor Aitken,
I published an open letter to you inthe Voice of OC. Please read it. Community members will create a permanent record of how each city council member votes on this issue, we hope you will choose the right side of this issue. A vote to renew the contract without cleaning house is a vote for mismanagement, incompetence, and cruelty.

Dear Council Member,
I hope you will read every word of my letter and take it serious ly, becaus e I would hate for it to one day become a part of my obituary.
I am writing to you as a res ident of Bels omet to as k you to pleas e vote " NO" on the proposed apartments at the Anaheim Hills Fes tival Center. I lived here during the Canyon Fire 2 in 2017, and I will never forget the terrifying feeling of being evacuated. My daughter and I were frightened enough jus t trying to get our dogs and us out - without the as sis tance of my hus band or son to help, as they were at work and couldn’ t get back home to us becaus e there was a four mile perimeter that was only letting res idents go out of the area. But even that was n’ t enough! We were stuck in my car alone, scared, watching the smoke coming clos er towards us from two directions , and we literally did not move for over an hour. It was n't just " traffic" - it was a total standstill. There was no place to go. When we finally managed to get to the other side of the 91 to meet up with the res t of our family, it looked like Armageddon all around us . Helicopters were diving into the river every two minutes .
The sky was an eerie, orange tinted black color. And we literally watched as the flames jumped the lanes of the 91 freeway and began moving towards caus ing even more devas tation. The 241 and 91 even freeways had to be clos ed. Where was our “ es cape route” then? The thought of adding hundreds of new apartments and about 1000+ more people to that exact same escape route is terrifying to thos e of us who have actually been in that situation. Our only es cape route could take us hours , and that’ s time we just don’ t have.
The reports for this project say that adding thes e cars will " only" add about 7 minutes to the evacuation time. That’ s a LIE. I CHALLENGE anyone who helped to create that report to come sit with me in the snarled mes s of traffic, if God forbid we have another fire like the one in 2017. Becaus e when you' re already stuck for three hours and the fire is moving toward you, 7minutes is a lifetime - or a death sentence. We don't have extra roads or "secret" ways out of the Hills ; we all end up on the same fewstreets , in the same few lanes . We virtually have one way in and one way out. Adding more people to a neighborhood that is already a bottleneck during a fire just feels like a tragedy waiting to happen. And I’mbegging you as a mother - please don’t be responsible for killing my children.
I don’t care what part of Anaheimanyone lives in, east or west - we are NEIGHBORS. Does anybody really think that it’s worth risking people’s lives just to add more outrageously expensive housing? Iunderstand that the city needs housing, but it shouldn't be built in a place where people are already struggling to get out safely.
And if you’re going to add more housing, try making it more AFFORDABLEfirst! Please don't make an existing danger even worse just for a new development. We are asking you to prioritize the lives and safety ofthe PEOPLEwho already live here and pay taxes here. Don’t be selfish with our lives .
Sincerely,
Dea and Scott Ogata

I lived here during the Canyon Fire 2 in 2017, and I will never forget the feeling of being stuck in my car, watching the smoke get closer, and literally not moving for over an hour. It wasn't just "traffic"— it was a total standstill. The thought of adding hundreds of new apartments and about 1000+ more people to that exact same escape route is terrifying to those of us who have actually been in that situation.
Forthose council members who live inthis area I can't believe you would be forthis. I'msure you have seen 1st hand howterrible the traffic is heading towards the 91 fwy onWeir canyon right past Serrano. It is horrible with all the people cutting across Serrano to get onto weir canyon so they can get on to the freeway. For us residents who live off of Weir Canyon just trying to get to the festival center orthe Savi Ranch shopping center is terrible. Our street backs up so much and now add in a fire that would make it even worse.
The reports for this project say that adding these cars will "only" add about 7 minutes to the evacuation time. Dear Council Member,
I moved to Anaheim Hills becaus e it is a beautiful, family- oriented community, but I am very concerned about the propos ed Shea/ Fes tival Center apartment project.
Since moving here, I've learned that our neighborhood is in a high- ris k fire zone with very limited ways to get out. I was shocked to read that it already takes over three hours to evacuate this area during an emergency. Adding over 1,000 more people and their cars to our streets seems like a huge ris k to everyone' s safety.
The project' s environmental report admits that thes e new apartments will make evacuation times even longer. As a parent, I think about what would happen if a fire broke out while I was trying to get my [ kids /pets / elderly parents ] to safety. If the roads are already failing, adding hundreds more cars into the mix will make a bad situation impos sible. It feels like the city is hoping for the bes t rather than planning for the worst.
I am not agains t new hous ing in general, but it has to be built in the right places . Putting high- dens ity hous ing at a known bottleneck in a fire zone is not res pons ible.
I am as king you to pleas e put our safety firs t and vote " No" on this project until we have a real solution for getting people out of the Hills safely.
Sincerely,

I am writing to you as a res ident of hidden ridge ( weir canyon and oak) to urge you to pleas e vote " No" on the propos ed apartments at the Anaheim Hills Fes tival Center.
I lived here since 1998 when this area was being developed and to say the least it is over populated for our safety.

The school scenario was scary, the bused the kids out and they went down Serrano and the bus es were stuck in traffic and the poor kids were watching the fire burn clos e to them. All becaus e of the conges tion on the streets. We were all frightened and not being able to get out of a true fire hell.
I recall watching the smoke get clos er, and literally not moving for over an hour. It wasn' t just " traffic"— it was a total stands till. The thought of adding hundreds of new apartments and about 1000+ more people to that exact same es cape route is terrifying to thos e of us who have actually been in that situation.
The reports for this project say that adding thes e cars will " only" add about 7 minutes to the evacuation time. But when you' re already stuck for three hours and the fire is moving toward you, 7 minutes is a lifetime. We don' t have extra roads or " secret" ways out of the Hills ; we all end up on the same few lanes . Adding more people to a neighborhood that is already a bottleneck during a fire jus t feels like a tragedy waiting to happen.
I understand that the city needs housing, but it shouldn't be built in a place where people are already struggling to get out safely. Please don't make an existing danger even worse just for a new development. We are asking you to prioritize the lives and safety of the people who already live here and pay taxes here.
Sincerely,

Dear Council Member,
I am writing to as k you to vote " No" on the Anaheim Hills Fes tival Center apartment project. You don' t need to be a traffic expert to see that Santa Ana Canyon Road is already at its limit. Mos t days , jus t getting to the store or work is a challenge. The idea that we can add over 400 apartments and about 1300 people to this area without creating a dis as ter during a wildfire evacuation jus t does n't pas s the " common sens e" test.
The city' s own reports admit that it already takes res idents over three hours to get out during a fire. To then say that adding another 7 minutes of delay is " not a big deal" is incredibly frus trating to thos e of us who live here. If a bucket is already overflowing, you don' t keep pouring more water into it and say it's fine. By approving this , the city is bas ically admitting the evacuation plan is broken but choosing to make it even more crowded anyway.
We need our leaders to look at the reality of our streets , not jus t the numbers on a developer' s spreadsheet. Pleas e do the res pons ible thing and protect the res idents who are already here. We need better ways to get out of the Hills , not more people trapped in them. Pleas e vote " No" on this project.
Sincerely,

Pleas e Council Member,
I am writing to you as a res ident of to as k you to pleas e vote " No" on the proposed apartments at the Anaheim Hills Fes tival Center. I lived since the fire in 2008 and experienced the fire that suddenly jumped the freeway from Corona and took down the apartments right by my street burning a tree down directly behind my hous e, and some hous es up the hill by the water tower. People los t everything. I never thought the fire could reach my hous e but thos e Santa Ana winds are horrible when they kick up— when not if.
The core city of Anaheim should not try to continue to earn money off of the Anaheim Hills area the way that they do. In the end it’ s all about the money I realize but we cannot handle any more people here. During the Canyon Fire 2 in 2017 I had to evacuate and stay at friends ’ s home. My son’ s truck was stuck on Santa Ana Canyon for over two hours going 3 miles with dogs and things in the car and if the fire was sweeping through, he would’ ve been hurt along with thous ands of others who were jammed along the Freeway.
Als o, how could any firefighters even maneuver becaus e there is a fire station right there? Even police cars couldn’ t get in and out of the anaheim hills police station.
Unfortunately, no one knew the 91 freeway would be such a horrendous trip headed toward the inland empire on a daily bas is people funneling cons tantly through our part of town. My own street has turned into a mini freeway in which it is backed up often. During the state of a big emergency, we would have major problems out in this area. And I know I’m not speaking for this tiny area of Anaheim Hills but also the Yorba Linda side of the 91 freeway down into the back into Orange.
I know you’re getting a lot of copy and paste letters , but please pay attention because it’s not a game. It’s not just oh let’s build some nice new houses or some little apartments where people could live. There are plenty of othertowns . Please do not let greed for be the guide.
Sincerely,
Dana Cody Hinkle

It seems many cities are building pickleball courts . I live in eas t anaheim across from Yorba Regional Park and the bas eball fields . There is open land that would be perfect for pickleball courts . The only courts I know of are the two ins ide the Eas t Anaheim Hills senior center. Two courts are not sufficient for the number of people who want to play, plus the gym is us ed for other activities .
I have many friends who live in Yorba Linda and they have added courts in many neighborhoods. Wondering and hoping Anaheim would cons ider adding courts at this location.

Anaheim City Council:
I have been a res ident of Anaheim Hills since 1988.
The fire safety is sues in Anaheim Hills are as great or greater today as they were in 2024, 2017 before that, 2012, 2007 and 2006 before that. Traffic has continued to increas e from the 91/ 55 freeway drivers us ing Serrano Ave & Santa Ana Cyn Rd. as a bypass. There are only 3 ways out of the Hills - there is Serrano Ave to the wes t, Imperial Hwy to the North & Wes t and Weir Cyn to the eas t. Whenever a brush fire happens, it comes from the Eas t so that eliminates Weir Cyn Rd as an egres s - there is no evacuation option to the south as Fremont Canyon eliminates option. I was evacuated in 2017 and it took me 45 minutes in bumper to bumper traffic to go 3 miles along Serrano Ave. The winds were blowing hard that day and the fire department meas urement calculated the fire moving at 9 miles per minute.
The fire department does keep things as safe as pos sible with fire watch and other preemptive measures but the winds are unforgiving. I choos e to vote for safety here over increas ed hous ing.
The recent Anaheim Hills project at Deer Canyon was denied due to severe fire safety is sues in this area. This project at the Fes tival Center is no different - it creates more traffic in an area that is already gridlocked on a mos tly daily bas is and is les s than one mile from the denied Deer Canyon Project. The fact that it is on developed land vs undeveloped land is meaningles s - the wind does n’ t really care; remember 9 miles per minute. It will burn through property either way. This area and all of the Hills are a potential fire trap if the right conditions are pres ent. I as k you to do the right thing and deny the Anaheim Hills Fes tival Project for the safety of our Hills res idents .
Sincerely,
Al Murphy

Dear Mayor and Council Members, and Planning Commissioners, I am writing as an Anaheim Hills resident to respectfully urge you to vote NO on the proposed Re nais sance Canyon Acre s de ve lopme nt located at 233 S. Quintana Drive , Anahe im, CA 92807 ( DEV2025- 00027).
While I understand the City’ s need for housing, this project raises serious concerns regarding traffic conge stion, wildfire evacuation safe ty, and ne ighborhood compatibility that must be addressed before any approval is considered.
According to the developer’ s own materials, this project would introduce 140 new ve hicle s into an area that already functions as a traffic and evacuation choke point. Quintana Drive is a narrow corridor with no viable alte rnate route s , and it serves as the sole exit for four narrow private roads , including Trail Drive homes, all merging into S. Quintana Drive. There has been no credible evidence presented that existing Canyon Acres traffic conditions have ever matched this level of added volume, nor that the roadway can safely accommodate it—especially during an emergency.
I lived through Canyon Fire 2 in 2017 and experienced complete gridlock while smoke was approaching, sitting in my car for over an hour without moving. This was not a minor inconvenience— it was frightening and dangerous. Project reports suggest the added traffic would increase evacuation time by “ only” seven minutes; however, when residents are already trapped for hours during a wildfire, seve n minute s can be the diffe rence be twe en safe ty and trage dy.
Beyond public safety, this development is not compatible with the surrounding ne ighborhood. Although the proposed project zoning is labeled Low De nsity (RS-2), the existing RS- 2 homes were not built to the scale, massing, or setback intensity proposed here. In addition, the majority of the project property is currently zoned RH-2 and abuts similar estate- style RH-2 zoning. A 25-unit proje ct doe s not ble nd with the surrounding single- family homes and does not reflect the established character or values of the community.
Growth should never come at the expense of public safety. Approving additional density be fore addressing evacuation routes, traffic infrastructure, and emergency response capacity places existing residents at unacceptable risk.
Should you find it helpful, I would welcome the opportunity for you or your staff to vis it the site and surrounding stre ets to better understand the physical constraints and safety concerns outlined above.
I respectfully ask you to prioritize safe ty, infras tructure , and community compatibility by voting NO on the Renaissance Canyon Acres project.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Dear Council Member,
I am writing to you as a resident of Anaheim and a homeowner on Basil Street in the East Anaheim Hills neighborhood to respectfully ask that you vote No” on the proposed apartments at the Anaheim Hills Festival Center.
I lived here during the Canyon Fire 2 in 2017, and I will never forget the fear of not being able to get to my children, who were stuck at school for hours during the evacuation. The roads were at a complete standstill. It wasn’t simply traffic — it was gridlock. And parents like me felt helpless, unable to reach our kids during a rapidly escalating emergency.
The project reports state that the additional vehicles would add approximately seven minutes to evacuation times. However, when residents are already facing hours of congestion while a wildfire advances, seven minutes can feel like a lifetime. Our neighborhood does not have multiple exit routes — we all funnel onto the same limited roadways. Adding hundreds of new apartments and more than a thousand additional residents to an area that is already becoming a bottleneck during emergencies raises serious safety concerns.
I understand that Anaheim needs housing, but development should not come at the expense of public safety. This location has already proven vulnerable during wildfire evacuations. Please prioritize the safety of existing residents and carefully consider the real-world evacuation risks before approving this project.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Dong Vu

Dear Mayor and Council Member s, and Planning Commissioner s, We are writing as Anaheim Hills residents to respectf ully urge you to vote NO on the proposed Renaissance Canyon Acres development located at 233 S. Quintana Drive, Anaheim, CA 92807 (DEV2025-00027).
This project raises serious concerns regarding traffic congestion, wildfire evacuation safety, and neighborhood compatibility that must be addressed before any approval is considered.
According to the developer ’s own materials, this project would introduce 140 new vehicles into an area that already functions as a traffic and evacuation choke point.
Quintana Drive is a narrow unlit corridor with no viable alternate routes, and it serves as the sole exit for four narrow private roads, all merging into S. Quintana Drive. There has been no credible evidence presented that the current roadway can accommodate an increase in traffic, especially during an emergency. Formal studies should be completed prior to the approval of any future development.
We have lived through several fire threats in this area and are acutely aware of just how inadequate even the existing roads are for evacuation purposes. Being trapped in a fire is extremely scary and dangerous and the city has a responsibility to maintain a level of development that does not add even more congestion to the already limited road capacity.
Living in this area with large spaces of overgrown and ill maintained brush has created a fire hazard that the city has repeatedly ignored. Along with the heavily landscaped grounds that are being maintained by homeowners, there are very large areas of hillside that are Not being maintained by Homeowners Associations in the area. Although these entities have been contacted on numerous occasions, they have failed to keep their homeowner’ s accountability for maintaining overgrown brush. As for the city, we have repeatedly contacted the fire authority and had them visit our home and personally view the blatant fire hazards in our area. Through multiple letters, contacts and personal visits, the city and fire authority has repeatedly failed to address or mitigate major fire risks in the area. This Leaves us with an increased risk of fire and now to add additional traffic to a small country road is not responsible behavior.
In addition, several years ago on Ramsgate Drive there was a collapse of several homes when the slope failed. The landslide ended up blocking much of the road on Hidden Grove. To date, the city has neither cleared the dirt nor required the owner to clear the dirt blocking a good portion of the Hidden Grove Road. In fact, when the street was repaved, they repaved around the slide area blocking the road even further. Pure negligence on the part of the city.
And, here we are again, with a city that not only doesn’ t maintain an area for safety but now wants to add even more traffic to an existing limited roadway.
This proposed development is not compatible with the surrounding neighbor hood.
Although the proposed project zoning is labeled Low Density ( RS-2), the existing RS-2 homes were not built to the scale, massing, or setback intensity proposed here. In addition, the majority of the project property is currently zoned RH-2 and abuts similar estate- style RH-2 zoning. A 25-unit project does not blend with the surrounding singlefamily homes and does not reflect the established character or values of the community.
We would be happy to meet any city representatives on site to show them first-hand how limited the access is in this area.
We respectfully ask you to prioritize safety, infrastructure, and community compatibility by voting NO on the Renaissance Canyon Acres project.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Chris McKeen and Kent Koepsell

Dear Mayor and Council Members, and Planning Commissioners, I am writing as an Anaheim Hills resident to respectfully urge you to vote NO on the proposed Re nais sance Canyon Acre s de ve lopme nt located at 233 S. Quintana Drive , Anahe im, CA 92807 ( DEV2025- 00027).

My neighbors lived through Canyon Fire 2 in 2017 and experienced complete gridlock while smoke was approaching, sitting in my car for over an hour without moving. This was not a minor inconvenience— it was frightening and dangerous. Project reports suggest the added traffic would increase evacuation time by “ only” seven minutes; however, when residents are already trapped for hours during a wildfire, se ve n minute s can be the diffe rence be twe en safe ty and trage dy.

Dear Planning Commissioners,
My name is Karissa Walker, and I live in the home that holds the easement for a portion of the road leading to Canyon Acres. I am writing to respectfully urge you to deny the proposed Renaissance Canyon Acres development located at 233 S. Quintana Drive, Anaheim, CA 92807 DEV2025- 00027).
This project would directly and significantly impact my family. Because my property includes part of the easement access to Canyon Acres, any increase in traffic will flow directly past my home and driveway. I have already nearly been hit twice by vehicles traveling to Canyon Acres. Both incidents occurred as I was coming down my driveway and cars quickly turned onto the street, almost colliding with me. This is happening before the project is even built.
There is already a steady amount of traffic on Canyon Acres Road as it is, including trash trucks, delivery drivers, and current workers - and the development has not even opened. Adding 25 new homes would drastically increase traffic on what is a very small, constrained road. It would also significantly increase congestion on Quintana Drive after the stop sign, which is an extremely narrow street.
In addition, it is already extremely dangerous for residents on Quintana Drive to turn left onto Santa Ana Canyon Road. The traffic flow makes it very difficult to safely merge, and I am honestly shocked there are not more accidents at that intersection as it is. Adding more residents to this area would only increase the number of vehicles attempting that same risky left turn, compounding an already unsafe situation.
While the developers claim the road meets regulatory width requirements, the real-world conditions tell a different story. There is simply no way a fire truck could safely travel up one side of Quintana Drive while a passenger vehicle fits on the other. In an emergency, that lack of maneuverability could have serious consequences.
My family moved into this home less than a year ago specifically to get away from high-traffic, densely populated areas. While I understand that development is sometimes necessary and property owners have rights, this particular location is not appropriate for the level of density being proposed. The surrounding neighborhood consists of single- family homes on quiet streets that were never designed to handle this volume of traffic.
Beyond the daily inconvenience, there are serious safety concerns. Particularly regarding wildfire evacuation. Quintana Drive functions as a narrow corridor with limited exit options. Increasing density before addressing traffic flow and emergency access puts existing residents at risk.
I respectfully ask that you prioritize the safety of current residents, the physical limitations of the roadway, and the character of the neighborhood by disapproving of the Renaissance Canyon Acres project.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

To Whom It May Concern:
My son and I have been residents of Anaheim Hills since 2019 and absolutely love this community.
I am opposed to the building of a 447 unit development in the Festival Shopping Center for the following reasons:
1. These new units will not likely be affordable as are most of the rental units in Southern California.
2. Traffic will become more of an issue as it can be on Santa Ana Canyon when the 91 freeway is a parking lot.
3. Although we are out of the drought now, who is to say what our future years will look like as far as water availability.
4. The Yorba Linda fire was not that long ago and should be a major consideration for adding that many more people to this area in the event of an emergency.
Thank you for your time and consideration of these issues.

I am writing to you as a res ident of Anaheim to as k you to pleas e vote " No" on the propos ed apartments at the Anaheim Hills Fes tival Center. I lived here during the Canyon Fire 2 in 2017, and I will never forget the feeling of being stuck in my car, watching the smoke get clos er, and literally not moving for over an hour. It was n't jus t "traffic"— it was a total stands till.
I unders tand that the city needs hous ing, but it shouldn' t be built in a place where people are already struggling to get out safely. Pleas e don' t make an exis ting danger even wors e jus t for a new development. We are as king you to prioritize the lives and safety of the people who already live here and pay taxes here.
Sincerely,
Galina and Eugene Markovich

Every city council mtg I see there is NEVER any talk about improvement for west Anaheim.
Ever.
This is ridiculous, the unfinished 39 Commons on Beach is a joke to the community. But any project near near disney or gardenwalk, or city hall gets finished.

Hi, my name is Lois Jones and I live at in Anaheim Hills just behind Festival center. I frequently drive on Santa Ana Canyon, Weir Canyon, Serrano as well as the area surrounding the Festival center. Whether driving to church to work or to any of the amenities along Santa Ana Canyon Road the current traffic is tremendous. I just can’t imagine what over 400 units might do to my ability to get around Anaheim Hills. On a daily basis.
My family and I have had to evacuate our home on three separate occasions. In one instance we were forced to go over Serrano Road into Orange to escape the fire. This was due to the amount of traffic that was on Weir Canyon trying to escape the flames.
I can’t imagine what it will be like when another fire occurs in our area. A three hour evacuation time is completely unacceptable and the idea to shelter in place when you’re fearing for your life is not humane.
Please do not permit the development of 447 units that is proposed in the festival center to take place.
I appreciate your consideration of my concerns. Sincerely, Lois Jones.

Hi,
I would like to be heard regarding the propos ed new development of hous ing in the festival center.
This is a high fire zone are in where the multiple times we have been evacuated it was major Chaos.
There is no Know your way. The street lights were not helpful during this time and there currently are only set to help Corona res idents cut thru the neighborhood.
We currently cannot get home owners ins urance due to the negligence of the city in regards to planting pine trees everywhere, letting them sprout and never attending to the growth.
We do not need to add any further traffic to an already dead stop traffic zone at weir and Santa Ana cyn. Daily. The streets are blocked every day during peak hours and often on the weekends .
The city council members are voted in by the community and there is a clear opposition to this meas ure.
Pleas e, Pleas e lis ten to our concerns and not no on this .
Thank you,
Tammy Witke

Justice Department Finds the Special School District of St. Louis’ s Seclusion and Restraint Practices Discriminate Against Students with Disabilities
02/23/2026 07:00 AM EST
WASHINGTON – Today, the Justice Department (“ the Department”) notified the Special School District of St. Louis, Missouri (“ the District”) that it found the District’ s seclusion and restraint practices violate Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act. After a twenty- one month investigation, the Department concluded that the District discriminates against students with disabilities by routinely subjecting them to ineffective seclusion practices that are highly susceptible to abuse and restraints without justification, rather than providing the interventions and supports they need to receive the education they are guaranteed by federal law.

Mayor Aitken and Members of the Anaheim City Council,
I am writing to demand jus tice for the police killing of Albert Arzola. I demand the full, unedited body camera footage from all officers , the immediate releas e of the autops y report, the names of the officers involved, and the immediate firing of the officer who shot Albert to death.
Albert was ambus hed by two Anaheim PD officers who leapt out of an unmarked vehicle and chased him to his hous e. One officer shot him in the back, killing him in front of his family. They threatened to shoot his family and then detained them at the scene for hours . They delayed medical attention for ten minutes and dragged Albert’ s lifeles s body onto the sidewalk.
Albert was doing nothing wrong and was not a threat to anyone. He was only 19-years- old and recently graduated from Katella High School. He was a hard- working res ident of Anaheim who took pride in his job and as pired to a career in culinary arts. He was a beloved son, family member and friend with a bright future ahead of him. Albert should be alive today!
I demand the full body camera footage of all officers from the incident. I demand the release of the autopsy report. I demand the names of the officers involved. And I demand that the officer who shot Albert be fired immediately.
Jus tice for Albert Arzola!

Hi council woman.
Thanks for your service.
I am writing you as a las t res ort bas ed upon all I am hearing and seeing on social media regarding this upcoming vote on march 3. What I am hearing is that the council has already made up their minds on which way they are voting. If that was the case, why did they pos tpone that vote? They should have jus t voted the las t time it was on agenda. Right? To add more people and cars into this EXTREME FIRE HAZARD AREA is jus t so wrong! And not what a reas onable pers on would do. So, it seems that money surely has to be involved although claiming that gets me in trouble apparently. What other reas on is there for people to willfully endanger thos e of us who already live here with this ins ane project? There are plenty of other locations in Anaheim that are perfectly suited for this type of project! And Anaheim Hills is totally different in its feel and character! Putting in high rise apartments like THE VIBE are totally out of character. That is a fact! Look at the original planned community plans for AH. Why not stick to that look and feel? And that has nothing to do with the fire evacuation is sue that clearly exis ts .
I jus t hope that each of you on the council can live with yours elves if/when we have another wildfire evacuation event and people are trapped in trying to evacuate! Shame on you!
I URGE YOU TO VOTE NO ON THIS PROJECT!
Sincerely,
A VERY CONCERNED RESIDENT
RickPollgreen
Thanks , Rick

As a parent, I think about what would happen if a fire broke out while I was trying to get my kids to safety.
Sincerely,
Manis ha

I’d really like to comment on the discontinuation of the art bus and art on demand. I think that it’s a really big disservice to the city And the tourism in the city. The employees love their jobs and they do an amazing job. They should definitely continue to do it. People rely on this service and it should really be continued.

I’d really like to bring up the fact that a company can use a tax ID to start utility services and not be charged a deposit upfront although that tax ID has never been used within the city before however a citizen cannot use a tax ID that is provided to them by the government and they are using it to earn credit It can be run on a credit report to obtain credit history, but they cannot use it to open an account. They have to be treated as though they have no credit history and open an account with a deposit upfront regardless of their credit it feels like citizens are treated like they’re not the same because they are immigrants who have a tax ID rather than a Social Security, although they are also paying taxes.

To Whom It May Concern, I would like to address a discrepancy in how utility service accounts are established. Currently, companies can use a tax ID to start services without an upfront deposit, even ifthat ID has no prior history with the city. In contrast, individual citizens using government- issued tax IDs to build credit are unable to use those IDs to open accounts. Despite having a verifiable credit history that can be run on a report, these individuals are treated as if they have no credit and are required to pay a deposit upfront. It appears that citizens who are immigrants paying taxes are being treated differently because they use a tax ID rather than a Social Security number. I believe all taxpayers should be held to the same standards and provided the same opportunities to establish services without unnecessary financial barriers.

To whom it may concern,
I have lived in this area for the majority of my life and was proud to be part of the first graduating class from Canyon High School. I currently own homes in the Hills and in Villa Park, and I care deeply about the safety and future of our community.
I have written to you before regarding my concerns about the proposed development. Unfortunately, it appears that financial considerations are being prioritized over public safety. I fundamentally disagree with this approach from our elected representative.
Your number one responsibility should be to keep your constituents safe. The current fire evacuation plan is flawed on multiple levels. It does not adequately account for existing traffic volume, let alone the additional congestion this development would create. In the event of another fire of any meaningful size, I fear that lives could be lost. That is not an acceptable risk.
I see no justification for moving forward with this building project until meaningful infrastructure improvements — including additional road access are completed. Furthermore, the current evacuation signage is inadequate and must be significantly improved.
As a member of your constituency, I strongly urge you to vote no on this proposal until safety is fully addressed and assured. On March 3, many of us will be watching closely to see who prioritizes the well-being of our community.
Respectfully,
Aline Young

Mayor Aitken and Members of the Anaheim City Council,
My name is David Pulido. I am writing to demand justice for the police killing ofAlbert Arzola. I demand the full, unedited body camera footage from all officers, the immediate release of the autopsy report, the names of the officers involved, and the immediate firing of the officer who shot Albert to death.
Albert was ambushed by two Anaheim PD officers who leapt out of an unmarked vehicle and chased him to his house. One officer shot him in the back, killing him in front of his family. They threatened to shoot his family and then detained them at the scene for hours. They delayed medical attention for ten minutes and dragged Albert’ s lifeless body onto the sidewalk.
Albert was doing nothing wrong and was not a threat to anyone. He was only 19-years- old and recently graduated from Katella High School. He was a hard- working resident of Anaheim who took pride in his job and aspired to a career in culinary arts. He was a beloved son, family member and friend with a bright future ahead of him. Albert should be alive today! I demand the full body camera footage of all officers from the incident. I demand the release of the autopsy report. I demand the names of the officers involved. And I demand that the officer who shot Albert be fired immediately.
Justice for Albert Arzola!

Dear Council Member, these is Johanna Torres,
I moved to Anaheim Hills because it is a beautiful, family- oriented community, but I am very concerned about the proposed Shea/ Festival Center apartment project. Since moving here, I' ve lea The project' s environmental report admits that these new apartments will make evacuation times even longer. As a parent, I think about what would happen if a fire broke out while I was tryi I am not against new housing in general, but it has to be built in the right places. Putting high- density housing at a known bottleneck in a fire zone is not responsible. I am asking you to Sincerely,
Johanna Torres

I acknowledge that there is a lack of housing in Southern California, and across much of our nation, and this issue needs attention. However, my NO vote recommendation is not due to NIBY. My request is because I have witnessed the traffic gridlock in leaving my home during an emergency. I vividly recall the last time we were evacuated by fire, and seeing fires burning on both sides of Weir Canyon road as we drove north down the hill to the 91 freeway.
Yes, we need more housing, but first we need the road infrastructure inplace to support the housing.
Please vote NO on the Festival Center Apartment Project.
Respectfully,
Cliff Peebles

Subject: Festival Re-Zoning to allow Multi Family Housing Project This is not about rich people in District 6 not wanting Multi Family in our area. I have lived in in District 6 for 32-years and: 1) We aren' t rich, we live paycheck to paycheck like the rest of our neighbors, 2) We are fine with putting more multi family in district 6 if we need it.
Just put it on the other side of Santa Ana Canyon and of the 91 freeway where people have multiple streets to use to evac uate in an emergency. THIS IS STRICTLY ABOUT LIFE AND SAFETY!
The Hills will catch fire again, it’s just a question of when.
W e are just asking our City Council to not be irresponsible with our lives and the lives of thes e potential new families by pac king more families and cars into this one area that is land locked on 3 sides by hills that catch fire and loc ked off on the remaining side by Santa Ana Canyon which isn’ t equipped to handle the amount of normal traffic it gets and certainly can’t handle safe evacuations .
Please be responsible before putting any more families at risk and putting the existing families in this little land locked area at greater risk by first fixing the infrastructure. If you want to rezone to allow dense multi family on this side of Santa Ana Canyon, widen Santa Ana Canyon. Or, give us actual, functional, over passes. They are spending millions in Los Angeles to give the wild life an overpass for their safety. I love our Mountain Lion populatin and am glad they are doing this, but don' t your constituents des erve at least as muc h before you vote to make their situation go from extremely unsafe to unimaginably unsafe? Also why not firs t extend W eir Canyon towards Orange and Irive. W e have been told for years years it was going to continue, but it still deadends not allowing us an alternate route to possible safety. Do more than just the " know Your W ay Plan" to cut down on our current 3+ hour evacuation times before putting another 1,000 estimated cars in this small pocket!
W e appreciate the work on the ” Know Your W ay” plan and we will be it's greatest supporters , but let’ s be realistic - it’s not enough to throw that many more families and cars into this already unsafe current situation.
And commercial/ retail usage AS IT IS APPROPRIATELY CURRENTLY ZONED FOR is not the sam e as 1,000+ more cars crammed into a parking structure for residential housing when trying to get human lives out safely. Dense res idential housing in this small pocket will make it worse than it would be for any commercial retail use that may go into the theater spac e. People aren' t shopping or going to appointments in festival center during wildfires. Those of us who live here know, THAT IS NOT W HAT HAPPENS IN OUR COMMUNITY! W HEN THE W INDS PICK UP AND ESPECIALLY WHEN A FIRE STARTS THERE W ON’ T be 1,000 CARS PARKED THERE TO USE W HATEVER PERMITTED USE MAY GO IN W HERE THE THEATER IS. W E DO KNOW THOUGH THAT UNDER THOSE CONDITIONS THE OCCUPANTS OF THOSE ESTIMATED 1,000 Additional cars will be there pac ked in their new propos ed parking structure with their new families scouring media to find out if they need to evacuate and then dis covering what we all know who already live here, that they can’ t get out in any safe, reasonable amount of time.
Not asking our representatives to take any drastic measures - Just asking them to vote NOT to change the zoning. Leave it as it is and vote no on this proposal. How will you live with yourselves if people burn in their cars trying to flee like they did on Maui and you personally voted to make evacuations more impacted?
My wife and I and our neighbors have spoke before, but it is worth repeating here. W e live on Altair Lane in the housing track above Target. One of the times were were evacuated, I believe it was during the 2017 fire, just trying to go from our hous e, out our trac k, taking Bauer Road to Roosevelt ( next to Festival) trying to get to Santa Ana Canyon ( a route that Google says takes 3 minutes in traffic), was one we couldn' t even complete because Santa Ana Canyon was so impacted due to the evacuation. It took us 2.5 hours jus t to get to the driveway going into Festival. W e jumped the center median, along with other neighbors as spot fires were popping up along the street and pulled into festival after 2.5 hours hoping that if the winds picked up and the fire headed our way we wouldn' t burn to death or die from smoke inhilation if we parked in the middle of the asphalt of the shopping center. W e are glad to have the Know Your W ay Plan to cut down any amount of time off our evacuation, but it is simply not enough given how long it took then to make anyone feel that another 1,000+ residential cars can safely be added to the mix when when human life is on the line and certainly not enough for you to feel comfortable approving this project.
I would be happy to talk further with any of you who want to know what the evacutation situation really is rather than going off of an obviously flawed traffic model that I can assure you does not reflect the reality that we all live in this sm all poc ket.
Sincerely,
Dean Gaynor
