Statistics for the cats at AVAS…
57% to 80% euthanized per year from 2009 onward to 2023.

During one of the most recent city council meetings it felt like the general public supplied options for improving shelter statistics. It didn’t feel like the council was receptive.

It feels like the general consensus from the city council is:

1. 75000+ residents can’t absorb/adopt the number of animals that come through the shelter. Therefore, what can one do.

2. The problem is with the residents not the shelter.

3. We don’t have the money.

Rather than thinking:

1. Ventura County and San Diego county are no-kill counties –AVAS could establish relationships with more rescues from these locations.

2. Let’s re-establish a relationship with best Friends Animal Society who can help rescue animals and provide additional funding.

3. Let’s implement TNR. Nationwide it’s been proven to be more cost effective.

4. Let’s develop ways to educate the residents on the importance of spay and neuter.

5. Let’s analyze the fiscal budget and find way to provide low-cost to no-cost spay and neuter for residences.

Sincerely,
Margaret Cashion
