To whom it may concern,
I am asking you to reform the leash law concerning cats. In Apple Valley the leash law applies to cats as well as dogs. Even though the law claims it does not include cats. It does!!! The trap and kill is implemented for these unfortunate cats and kittens.
Citizens are deeply concerned about the treatment of these cats. They are labeled as feral and denied medical care which is cruel. These poor cats are deemed unfriendly and are immediately euthanized. They don’t even stand a chance at this shelter. That is disturbing to say the least. It’s basically a trap the poor cat and kill them. These cats are never seen by the public to possibly get adopted. These poor cats are simply labeling them as unfriendly without a proper evaluation.
Space is also not an issue. But sadly, these poor cats in non adoptable areas are immediately killed. This shelter does not even show all the cats to the public. These poor souls have no hope. Their future is decided right then and there….they will be murdered. As for cats that are actually adopted from Apple Valley is the number is minimal at best. We can do better for this innocent cats that don’t ask to be put in this situation. They want to live.
That is where TNVR comes in. It is cost effective. Provide low cost spay/neuter programs. Our city council needs to address the lack of care and treatment when it comes to animals. They deserve much better than what is happening now.
To start with, a low cost spay/neuter program needs to be installed. In the case of managing cat population there needs to be a trap, neuter, vaccinate, and release back to their colony. This will control the number of kittens born. This also will keep these cats healthy.
Reform the evaluation process of these cats when they enter the shelter. Give these cats a chance! They deserve it. They deserve to live. Make sure all these wonderful cat’s info and pictures are available to the public so they have the chance to find a loving home.
Provide the rescues and public with possible space issues so everyone is aware that we need to act to help these animals so euthanasia is never an issue. Provide rescues access to these animals so their pictures and bios reach more rescues and people. This will improve their adoption chances.
Please provide medical care to these cats. The stories of refusal of treatment has resulted in the death of newborn kittens, the needless pain and suffering of cats, the maiming of cats, and the death of cats. This is all unacceptable and cruel. The shelter is responsible for the health and well being of these cats. They have failed tremendously.
We need to make it right.
We need to promote cat adoptions. We need to stop the euthanasia of cats in nonadoption areas when there are no space issues. There is absolutely no reason this shelter needs to be killing these cats.
This is extremely urgent. The murders need to stop. It’s cruel. These are innocent animals that did not ask to be put in this situation. They did not ask to be homeless and living on the streets. This demands immediate action to improve the care and welfare of our animals in the community. We can do better for these cats. TNVR works. These animals are worth it. They deserve to live. We do not have the right to end their lives.
It’s simply not right and most definitely not humane.
I appreciate you reading this urgent message and look forward to the positive and humane actions from the city council to better these wonderful animal’s lives. Please think of these cats and what you can do to improve their life. I would be eternally grateful ,as would the cats, for reform of the leash laws for cats and the end of murdering innocent souls.
Thank you,
Angela Helman
