Dear Apple Valley City Council Members,
I hope this email finds you well. I am writing to bring to your attention a pressing issue concerning the high euthanasia rate of cats at the Apple Valley Animal Shelter. As a concerned citizen and advocate for animal welfare, I urge the council to prioritize solutions to address this critical problem.
According to recent statistics, the Apple Valley Animal Shelter has been facing a staggering near 93% euthanasia rate for cats. This alarming figure underscores the urgent need for proactive measures to mitigate cat overpopulation and improve the welfare of these animals within our community.
To effectively address this issue, I strongly recommend that the council consider implementing the following solutions:
1. Remove Cats from the Leash Law: Cats do not present a danger to the citizens of Apple Valley, and no evidence that their inclusion in the leash law does anything more than increase the number of cats that are surrendered to the shelter.
2. Implement a Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) Program: TNR programs have proven to be highly effective in controlling feral cat populations by humanely trapping, sterilizing, and returning them to their habitats. This approach not only stabilizes cat colonies but also prevents the influx of new litters into the shelter.
3. Offer Free Spay and Neuter Services to Residents: Access to affordable spay and neuter services is crucial in preventing unplanned litters and reducing the number of cats surrendered to shelters. By offering free or subsidized spay/neuter programs, we can empower residents to take proactive steps in controlling cat overpopulation.
By prioritizing these solutions, the council can take meaningful steps towards reducing the euthanasia rate at the Apple Valley Animal Shelter and promoting responsible pet ownership within our community. I believe that with collective effort and commitment, we can create a more humane and sustainable future for our feline companions.
I kindly request that you consider my recommendations and take proactive measures to address this pressing issue. Your leadership and support in this matter are greatly appreciated, and I am confident that together, we can make a positive difference in the lives of cats in our community.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
Jeff Oxford
