Council Members:
This is a considered recommendation (involving a variety of discussions with Atherton residents) for the Council to re-consider the current proposal for 6 additional EV chargers and create a process that includes our residents to determine the best option to meet the goals of the PCE Award. In summary:
1. The PCE Grant to advance the Town’s sustainability initiatives most probably could be used in areas that will provide much more benefit to our residents than a few more EV charging stations.
1. The Town has three volunteer, resident committees (Transportation, Environment & Park/Rec) that could provide the “Voice of the Resident” on this issue, but they apparently have not been engaged in any discussion & planning
These committees were established to advise the Council and staff on the development and execution of Town policies.
The committees may have other suggestions for the PCE Grant award of $181,946 to advance the Town’s sustainability initiatives that would both add real value to our residents and better meet sustainability goals b) The four EV Charging stations at the Town Center are very rarely all engaged at the same time (Do we have daily/time usage data from the current supplier?)
If you own an EV in Atherton you have one at home and the TC & HPP are within a mile or 2
We do not need any more EV chargers for our residents or staff 2) Parking Issues:
Parking spots at both the TC and HPP (near Jennings Pavilion) are very limited
Losing four parking spots to EV’s near Jennings will create a greater problem in that congested area
3) EV Chargers for the Police Dept:
-As more electric vehicles are added to the PD it does make sense for EV Charging stations in their parking lot
The Recommendation:
1. Proceed with the EV Chargers for the PD Dept
BUT,
2. Pause any more efforts on adding EV Chargers to HPP until the Council can obtain input and suggestions from our residents.
-This could easily be done by asking each Committee (Transportation, Environments & Park/Rec) to review the options and make recommendations
0r,
-Members of the three resident committees could form a “Focus Group” that has representation from each committee and then work together on the issue/opportunity
Note: Any delay in implementation of adding more EV Chargers is acceptable since there is no urgency in this matter
I appreciate your continued dedication and interest in meeting our sustainability goals, but believe that there are better sustainability options than just buying & installing more EV Charging stations in the town.
Best, Ken
