Item No. 5
Town of Atherton
CITY COUNCIL STAFF REPORT – CONSENT AGENDA
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL

GEORGE RODERICKS, CITY MANAGER
FROM: STEVE McCULLEY, CHIEF OF POLICE
DATE: MARCH 18, 2026
SUBJECT: DECLARE AS SURPLUS TWO MARKED POLICE VEHICLES.

RECOMMENDATION
1) Declare one (1) 2018 Ford Explorer marked police vehicle as surplus and authorize the sale via auction.
2) Declare one (1) 2019 BMW-marked police motorcycle as surplus and authorize the sale via auction.

BACKGROUND
The fleet of vehicles used by the Atherton Police Department (APD) is regularly reviewed to identify vehicles that need replacement due to mileage and wear. The Department has a vehicle replacement fund to which annual amounts are contributed, so that when vehicles reach the end of their useful life, funds are available for their replacement.

After reviewing the PD fleet, it was determined that one of our current 2018 Ford Explorers, marked as a patrol car (mileage 106,822), and one 2019 BMW marked police motorcycle (mileage 55,914) are both in poor overall condition. Due to their age, mileage, and mechanical condition, these vehicles have reached the end of their service expectancy as marked police patrol vehicles.

Staff recommends these vehicles be sent to auction after the emergency equipment is removed.

This recommendation is based on the vehicle's overall condition, its current value, and the rising cost of maintenance and repairs.

ANALYSIS
Surplus Vehicles
All emergency equipment has already been removed. Staff recommends this vehicle be sent to auction to avoid further maintenance expenses.
