Proclamation
IN RECOGNITION OF THE 250TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SIGNING OF THE
DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE
WHEREAS, July 4, 2026, marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and the founding of the United States of America; and
WHEREAS, the nation's Semiquincentennial, recognized nationally as America250, invites communities across the country to mark this milestone and to reflect on the principles that have guided the United States for two and a half centuries; and
WHEREAS, preserving, studying, celebrating, and appreciating our shared history helps strengthen communities as we work together toward the ideals of liberty and equality embedded in the Declaration of Independence; and
WHEREAS, the 250th anniversary provides an opportunity to celebrate and recognize the significant contributions Athertonians have made to local, state, and national history; and WHEREAS, the principles of self-governance and civic participation that led to the Nation’s founding remain alive in Atherton today through the engagement of its residents in the life of their community; and WHEREAS, the Town of Atherton, incorporated in 1923, has contributed proudly and significantly to the history of the United States of America and the State of California for more than 100 years; and WHEREAS, the enduring character of Atherton as a residential community reflects the values of family, neighborliness, and stewardship that have shaped both the Town and the nation across generations; NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I, the Mayor of the Town of Atherton, and the Atherton City Council do hereby proclaim that the Town of Atherton commemorates the United States' Semiquincentennial Year of 2026, and call upon all its residents to reflect upon the significance of this commemoration and the role our community and its diverse people have played in the history and development of the United States of America..
