AGENDA ITEM NO. 9. C
TO: The Honorable Mayor and City Council
FROM: Griselda Price, Director of Administrative Services DATE: June 23, 2022
RE: Consider Establishing One Unpaid Internship Positions within City Hall
INFORMATION:

With the recent creation of the Summer Internship position, the City received strong interest from AHS alumni to join the City for the summer. A total of six viable candidates were considered, with all of them being worthy of hiring. The top three candidates are all attending top universities around the country and will be great additions. Of the top three, one is able to join the City as an unpaid intern with his undergraduate program providing them with a stipend. The City would like to include this candidate as a volunteer/unpaid intern.

RECOMMENDATION:

With the City providing funding for one Summer Internship position and the California City Management Foundation (CCMF) grant providing for another, the City is able to add a third individual through an unpaid/volunteer position.

Speaking with RMA and the City Attorney, if the City were to bring this individual on, it would be best to have a position that specifically identifies as unpaid/volunteer and understood that it will not be a burden on the general fund.

Staff’s hope is creating this position we may be able to continue filling it in the future with more local talent.

Recommend by Resolution, approve establishing one unpaid/volunteer internship position within City Hall.

FISCAL IMPACT:

None. The unpaid intern position would serve to assist staff while gaining experience in a governmental job setting without pay.
