ADMINISTRATIVE REPORT

MEETING DATE: April 23, 2025 AGENDA CATEGORY: Consent - Agreements TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council
FROM: Kristina Budak, Water Director
DATE: April 11, 2025
SUBJECT: Contract Change Order No. 2 with Nicholas Construction (increase compensation $17,500) to reconstruct the Kern River Backup Weir (Ward 3)

RECOMMENDATION:

Staff recommends approval of the contract change order.

BACKGROUND:

The scope of work for this project in general consists of replacing the existing Kern River Canal Backup Weir just east of the Coffee Road bridge. The work includes demolition and removal of existing weir and adjacent retaining wall; removal of existing rubble; and construction of a new reinforced concrete weir with wingwalls and abutment, and adjacent retaining wall.

During construction, Nicholas Construction submitted a request for information in which they proposed a change in the sequencing of work in regards to the instrument room. The proposal is to demolish the existing instrument room and then integrat e the existing instrumentation equipment into the new instrument room. This approach will eliminate the need to incur costs to protect the existing instrument room, while the new instrument room is under construction, providing a credit of $15,000 and improve operating efficiencies by having all equipment in one location at the completion of the project . The additional work of transferring and integrating the existing instrumentation into the new instrument room has a cost of $32,500, for a net change cost of $17,500.

Original Contract Amount = $5,309,010
Total of Previous Change Orders = $190,000
Current Contract Change Order = $17,500
