FROM: Greg Terry, Chief of Police
DATE: June 13, 2025
SUBJECT: Appropriate $186,406 received from Kern County to the Police Operating budget within the general fund
for reimbursement of the Street Interdiction Team (SIT) for activities related to Assembly Bill 109.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends approval of the appropriation.
BACKGROUND:
In support of Assembly Bill 109 (Public Safety Realignment), the Kern County Community Corrections Partnership has provided funding to local law enforcement agencies to support crime suppression and offender monitoring strategies. The Bakersfield Police Department’s Street Interdiction Team (SIT) works in collaboration with the County to conduct targeted enforcement focused on high -risk offenders and known problem areas throughout the city.
The City of Bakersfield, through the Bakersfield Police Department, entered into an agreement with the County of Kern to participate in this countywide effort. This ongoing partnership includes reimbursement for overtime incurred by personnel assigned to the SIT operation during the 2024 calendar year.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The Police Department has received a total reimbursement of $225,653 in the current fiscal year from the County of Kern for SIT-related activities. Of this amount, $186,406 was not previously budgeted and must be appropriated to the Police Operating Budget within the General Fund. The remaining portion is already included in FY 2024-25 operating budget. This action ensures proper allocation of funds to cover overtime expenses already incurred. There is no net impact to the General Fund.
