Fire Civil Service Overview
The Fire Department Civil Service Board is an advisory body to the City Council. It is composed of three (3) members, appointed by the full Council.
LEGAL AUTHORITY
City Charter Section 183.
TERM
Three (3) years. Appointments are made in December.
QUALIFICATIONS
Members must be residents of the City throughout their terms, but who otherwise shall have no connection with City Government.
DUTIES
The Commission formulates rules and regulations governing the selection, promotion and discipline of members of the Fire Department.
MEETINGS
Meets the second Monday of each month at 3:00 p.m., Fire Station No. 1, 2101 H Street. All meetings are open to the public and last approximately one hour. Members may also be requested to sit on special board meetings to review disability and/or disciplinary action for another Civil Service Board within the City of Bakersfield.
REMUNERATION
Twenty-five Dollars ($25) a month when a meeting is held.

Public Health Disaster Preparedness Coordinator at Tulare County Public Health Department; coordinated first-responders, ambulance, and hospitals services in disaster preparedness. 2/14/2011 to 10/30/2013: Administrator at Kern County Public Health Services Department; supervised 62 FTEs, worked with the Kern County Civil Service Commission on job descriptions, workforce planning, discipline due-process and resolution. Retired from the County of Kern to pursue a second career in academia where I teach public service relying on my experiences to underpin the curriculum.
Please explain why you wish to serve on a Board/Commission for the City of Bakersfield I'm at the altruistic level on Maslow's hierarchy of needs and wish to find ways to do things for others as my basic needs have been met: Time to give back.Additionally, I have great respect for our first-responders as I worked with them when I was a Hall Ambulance paramedic for 16 years.
