Multi-Modal Transportation & Traffic Safety Committee Bi-Monthly Report June 2026

Projects
The City of Bakersfield Public Works Department is committed to identifying, planning, and implementing traffic calming improvements that enhance safety and mobility throughout the community. These initiatives are designed to improve roadway conditions for all users, with particular emphasis on increasing safety and accessibility for pedestrians, bicyclists, and other vulnerable road users.

By strategically prioritizing corridors and neighborhoods with elevated traffic volumes, safety concerns, and significant pedestrian activity, the Department seeks to reduce collisions, improve roadway operations, and support a more balanced transportation network. These efforts also contribute to broader City goals related to multimodal mobility, neighborhood livability, and sustainable transportation.

The following provides a summary of current and completed projects that incorporate traffic calming and multimodal transportation improvements. Each project reflects the City’s ongoing commitment to enhancing transportation safety, improving accessibility, and creating a more connected, resilient, and equitable community for residents and visitors alike.

Strategy
The Public Works Department is committed to advancing continuous improvement throughout the City by identifying, evaluating, and implementing initiatives that enhance residents’ quality of life. In addition to responding to community needs and public requests, the Department prioritizes efforts that improve transportation safety and accessibility near schools, expand and enhance multimodal transportation infrastructure, and revitalize key historic corridors.

A significant component of these efforts is the ongoing transformation of the Downtown core and Old Town Kern areas, which serve as important centers for commerce, culture, and community activity. Through these strategic investments and improvement initiatives, the Department seeks to promote a safer, more accessible, sustainable, and resilient community while supporting the City’s long-term growth and development objectives.
