FROM: Kevin Albertson, Fire Chief
DATE: October 7, 2026
SUBJECT: Appropriate $13,776 for a Cal Water charitable donation to the Fire Department General Fund Operating budget to purchase additional shelter accessories.

RECOMMENDATION:

Staff recommends approval of the appropriation.

BACKGROUND:

The Bakersfield Fire Department (BFD) was awarded $13,776 charitable donation from California Water Service (Cal Water) to purchase additional shelter accessories. This donation was made through Cal Water’s Firefighter Grant Program, which is dedicated to helping local fire departments protect both their teams and the communities they serve by supporting the purchase of essential gear and life-saving equipment. The funds will be used to procure additional shelter accessories to strengthen the Bakersfield Fire Department’s emergency response capabilities, particularly within the area of Urban Search and Rescue (USAR), bolstering the department’s ability to respond to earthquakes and other severe natural disasters within the community where the preservation of human life is paramount.

FISCAL IMPACT:

Partial funding for the equipment will be provided through the donation, with the remaining balance available within budgeted department resources.
