, BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ART & INDUSTRIAL

WOMEN'S CLUB
The Club was organized January 5, 1950. In 1951
the Club became affilates of the Calif. State &
National Association of colored Women's Club Inç.

The women of Barstow united as a club to promote
better standards of life through organized endeavors
to raise the social, economic and culture status of
the Club. The motto is "Have Courage", , The "
purpose of the Club is to work for higher social,
economic, educational and culture development of
women. The Art & Industrial Wömen's Clúb have
had many accomplishments over the years. We
began the Brotherhood Program in Barstow in an
effort to bring local Churches and Residents together
to celebrate Black History in the month of February.

It is a yearly coming together of the community. We
have been responsible for giving local High School •
Graduates Scholarships, gifts and special
recognition to our youth inthe community. We are
committed to the edučational and culture growth of
our youth.
• The Club organized a young girls club, "The
Cinderella Girls" ", and a young adult club, "The
Charm Social Club",. The Charm Club began to
sponsor Peace Breakfast in February and a Sweet
Heart Ball for Valentine's Day. The Art & Industrial
Women's Club has been responsible for bringing key
people into the community as guest speakers. The
Club began the Annual Peace Breakfast, celebrating
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday from the first year it became a National Holiday, sponsored a
recognition dinner Honoring Mrs. Cora Harper and
Mr. General Owens for their community work and:
education. A Community Choir was organized each
year to sing for the Brotherhood Program, for the last
3 years the Choir has continued throughout the year
singing God Praises at various concerts and upon.
the request of any group. The Choir is planning to
- have their First Live Recording Session, March 21,
1997. The Club established a separate Scholarship
Fund in the name of Cora Harper for those youth that
has already finished 1 year of college.

The Club working with our newly elected Mayor and
city staff organized a Peace March in January to
celebrate the cities 50th year and Dr. Martin Luther
King Birthday. We have donated to many worthy
causes, we have purchased nursery supplies to
Barstow Community Hospital when it was first open
in Barstow, Christmas gifts to Patton State Hospital
and residents of Rimrock Villa Convalescent Home.

We have provided food, clothing and help on utilities
to some of our local needy, we provided Christmas
Baskets and Fruit Baskets to the shut in and low
income families. We are still donating to youth that
approach us for assistance. We thank God that we
are able to uphold the National Motto, "Lifting as we
Climb"
, and the Calif. State Motto, "Deeds not
Words"
