AGENDA MATTER:
RECOMMENDATION FOR A STREET DEDICATION AT THE CORNER OF ARMORY ROAD AND
SANDLEWOOD COURT IN MEMORY OF MIGUEL FONSECA VARGAS
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
Miguel Fonseca Vargas was a local resident who was actively involved in our community, devoting countless hours of service to make Barstow a better place to live. The City has received a Street and Facility Naming Application from the family of Mr. Vargas requesting that a dedication sign be placed at the corner of Armory Road and Sandalwood Court to honor his memory.
DISCUSSION:
The City has received a Street and Facility Naming Application from the family of Mr. Miguel Fonseca Vargas, requesting that the corner of Armory Road and Sandalwood Court be dedicated in memory of their father. Mr. Vargas, who was born and raised in Barstow contributed many years in assisting in the construction local business still standing on Main Street and dedicating several years coaching Little League participants.
In 1951 Mr. Vargas was drafted into the Army and fought in the Korean War. He was wounded in battle and was given a Purple Heart Medal for his commitment in fighting for his county.
Section 12.20.120 of the Barstow Municipal Code stipulates that the City Council shall have the final authority to designate commemorative street names. Therefore, it is requested that the City Council authorize the dedication of the corner of Armory Road and Sandalwood Court in memory of Miguel Fonseca Vargas.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The cost to produce and install the sign will be approximately $500 and funding is available in the Community Services Department Street Maintenance Division No. 100.140.425.05.525.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Authorizing the dedication of the corner of Armory Road and Sandalwood Court in memory of Miguel Fonseca Vargas and waive the reading.
