AGENDA ITEM
AGENDA MATTER:
PRESENTATION OF PROCLAMATION TO DONATE LIFE CALIFORNIA IN RECOGNITION OF
DMV/DONATE LIFE MONTH
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
A proclamation will be presented to Donate Life California in recognition of DMV/Donate Life Month.
DISCUSSION:
April has been designated National Donate Life Month by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to help raise public awareness of the critical need for organ, tissue, marrow, and blood donations. Currently, more than 20,000 people are waiting for life-saving organs in California alone, with more than 100,000 nationwide. Because of the shortage of donors, 17 people die every day waiting for a transplant. One single donor can save eight lives by donating organs (heart, kidneys, lungs, pancreas, liver, and small intestine) and save and heal the life of 75 others through the gift of corneas and tissue (bone, skin, veins, tendons, etc.).
It is only fitting that the City of Barstow show its support of the Donate Life California Donor Registry program and recognize the importance of donating organs and tissues to save lives. A proclamation will be presented to Donate Life California. Donate Life Ambassador Maria Pilawa will be present to accept the proclamation on behalf of Donate Life California. Ms. Pilawa is seven years and seven months postdouble lung transplant and is very grateful for a second chance at life.
FISCAL IMPACT:
None.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Present proclamation to Donate Life California in recognition of DMV/Donate Life California Month.
