Computer Concepts
A beach cleanup field trip would provide valuable, real-world experiences that ties into our Computer Concepts classes. Here are some lesson ideas that we could integrate into our courses depending on which unit we are covering at the time of the field trip.

Microsoft Word Lesson Example Activity: Research & Report Writing

1. Before the field trip, have students research and write a brief report about the impact of plastic waste on marine ecosystems using Word. They should use Word's features like footnotes/endnotes for citation, header and footer for pagination, and table of contents for organization.

2. During the cleanup, students should make observations about the types of waste they are collecting and any impacts they see on the beach or wildlife.

3. After the cleanup, students should update their reports with a section on their firsthand observations, including photos they took during the cleanup.

Microsoft Excel Lesson Example Activity: Data Collection & Analysis

1. During the cleanup, students should categorize and count the waste they collect (e.g., plastic bottles, bags, straws).

2. After the cleanup, students will input this data into an Excel spreadsheet. They can use Excel's formulas to calculate totals and averages, and sorting and filtering features to organize and analyze the data.

3. They can then use Excel's charting tools to create visual representations of their data, such as a pie chart showing the proportion of different types of waste.

Microsoft PowerPoint Lesson Example Activity: Presentation of Findings

1. After the data analysis, students can use PowerPoint to create a presentation about their findings. They should include background information about the issue of plastic waste, their cleanup experience, data analysis, and suggestions for solutions or improvements.

2. Students should incorporate PowerPoint features like slide transitions, animations, inserting and formatting images, inserting and formatting data charts (from Excel), and video (if they took any during the cleanup).

3. These presentations could be shared with the rest of the school, displayed at a school event, or even presented to local community groups or local government to raise awareness about the issue.
