AGENDA ITEM
AGENDA MATTER:

PROPOSED MODIFIED HOLIDAY SCHEDULE
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

City Hall is currently closed for observed holidays on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve Day, and New Year's Day.

DISCUSSION:

During the holiday season, the City of Barstow faces challenges with reduced staffing levels, leading to difficulties in maintaining department coverage. As a solution, City staff recommends closing City Hall from Christmas Eve to New Year's Day. This revised holiday schedule provides employees the choice to use accrued paid time off or continue with their regular work hours to catch up on tasks and prepare for the new year.

Please note that while police, fire, and certain public works operations will remain active during the holiday season, City Hall will be closed from December 24th to January 1st.

To ensure proper communication with City residents, City staff will provide advance notice of the modified holiday schedule through various communication channels, including signs, social media posts, press releases, and handouts at the counter.

City staff contacted nearby cities like the Town of Apple Valley, the City of Hesperia, and the City of Victorville, all of which have acknowledged the closure during this time of the year. The adjusted holiday schedule serves as a proactive and efficient resolution to the challenges encountered by City staff during the holiday season.

FISCAL IMPACT:

No fiscal impact. Employees will be required to either work their normal scheduled work days or use available paid time off.

RECOMMENDED ACTION:

The City recommends approval of Resolution xxxx-2024.
