AGENDA MATTER:

PLANNING COMMISSION VACANCIES
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

At the City Council meeting held on October 7, 2024, staff notified the Council that two seats on the Planning Commission will become vacant as of December 31, 2024. The Council instructed staff to advertise the vacancies and start accepting applications. Council Members Noble and Hernandez were chosen to take part in the interview process and will provide their recommendations to the Council for appointing the new Planning Commission members.

DISCUSSION:

In accordance with Section 2.24.035 of the Barstow Municipal Code, the Planning Commission members must be appointed after notifying the City Council of any vacancies or expiring terms. The City Council, upon being informed of an upcoming vacancy at the October 7, 2024, opted to publicly announce the vacancies and formed a Selection Committee consisting of Council Members Noble and Hernandez to assist with the interview process and forward their recommendations for Council review and approval.

After receiving four applications, interviews were conducted by the Committee on December 3, 2024.

After a lengthy discussion, the Committee's recommendations, for the Council's consideration, are Beatrice Lint, and Ted Weasma.

Beatrice Lint, a Barstow resident for over 45 years and a member of the Planning Commission since 2013, brings a wealth of experience and expertise.

Ted Weasma, a resident of Barstow for over 25 years, has a background as a Construction Inspector and served as a Mineral Examiner for the BLM in Oregon and Washington.

Following tonight's decision, the newly appointed Commissioners will take the oath at the upcoming Planning Commission meeting.

FISCAL IMPACT:

None.

RECOMMENDED ACTION:

The Selection Committee recommends the City Council appoint Beatrice Lint and Ted Weasma as Planning Commissioners for one term, (to end 12/31/2028).
