AGENDA ITEM
AGENDA MATTER:

ASSESSMENT AND FUNDING NEEDS FOR SPORTS PARK FIELD IMPROVEMENTS EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

At the request of Council Member Williams, with a second from Mayor Silva, staff was asked to assess the current conditions of the two remaining infields at the Sports Park and explore potential funding options for their improvement.

DISCUSSION:

Staff conducted an on-site evaluation of the two remaining fields at the Sports Park. Two infields were found to be in deteriorating condition and in need of repair to meet appropriate usability and safety standards. Preliminary estimates indicate that the cost to complete the necessary improvements for both infields is approximately $125,000. Currently, the FY 2024-25 budget does not include funding for this project, and there are no unallocated funds available in the current fiscal year. As a result, staff is unable to move forward without further direction from the Council or the identification of alternative funding sources.

Councilman Williams requested this item to evaluate the use of public safety funds generated by cannabis sales to upgrade athletic facilities, including the field renovations, to ensure the safety of student athletes.

FISCAL IMPACT:

The fiscal impact is currently unknown, as staff is awaiting direction from the City Council before identifying potential funding sources or reallocations.

RECOMMENDED ACTION:

Staff is requesting direction from the City Council on the following:

1. Should staff explore the possibility of pausing or reprioritizing other planned repairs in order to reallocate approximately $125,000 for the Sports Park field improvements within the current fiscal year?

2. If immediate funding is not available, should the Sports Park field improvements be prioritized for consideration during the FY 2025-26 budget planning process?
