REQUEST FOR FEE WAIVER FROM THE CITY OF BARSTOW
BACKGROUND: Each year, the California Preservation Foundation (CPF) offers their Doors Open program on three consecutive weekends, dividing the state into three regions. This year, California Historic Route 66 Association (CHR66A) submitted an application to showcase desert towns along the California Historic Route 66 National Scenic Byway. We want to promote these towns and their preservation successes in anticipation of the Centennial of Route 66 in 2026. We have been successful in writing and/or assisting with grant applications to help preserve historic buildings in many Route 66 desert towns and have many success stories to share.

Our application to host a Doors Open event was selected but no funding is awarded for these events.

The publicity generated and the economic impact for the host town is important to CHR66A. We decided to use Barstow as the launch point for this event because it is the western gateway to the National Scenic Byway.

Friday, September 12 - Early-arriving participants can take a ride in a motorized stage coach and view the Barstow Main Street Murals and visit the original Del Taco. Guests may stay at the Quality Inn at a reduced room rate. Dinner is on their own in Barstow.

Saturday, September 13 - Participants will board a motorcoach and travel to Needles, Amboy and Chambless to learn about preservation projects. They will return to Barstow, again staying at the Quality Inn. They may choose to see a movie at the Starlight Drive-In after dinner on their own in Barstow.

Sunday, September 14 - Participants will travel by motorcoach to Newberry Springs, Daggett and Barstow returning mid-day for Sunday brunch at Los Domingos. There is great interest in the Casa del Desierto and the history behind restoring this beautiful building. CHR66A organizer Lynne Miller is also a member of the Harvey Girl Historical Society. She will give a PowerPoint presentation about Fred Harvey and the Harvey Girls and then give a tour of the Harvey House wearing her Harvey Girl outfit. After the tour, participants can visit museums in Barstow. The event ends late Sunday afternoon.

BUDGET: Participants register for the event through CPF for $20. None of that money is returned to CHR66A. We incur expenses for the motorcoach (deeply discounted at $2000), driver gratuity, room and food, on-board treats and water, printed materials, goodie bags, and small gifts for our speakers.

REQUEST: As a small non-profit, we are requesting a waiver of the fees to use the Harvey House west ballroom for two hours (includes our set-up, presentation, and breakdown) and request 30 folding chairs and one table.

IMPACT: This project aligns with our CHR66A mission to promote, preserve, and educate about Route 66 in California. We hope that this Doors Open event will encourage participants to return to Barstow and the other Route 66 towns to see the many other sites that time will not allow us to explore during this event. We appreciate your consideration of our request.
