Proclamation in Support of the Barstow Cemetery
WHEREAS, the Barstow Cemetery serves as a place of honor, remembrance, and reflection for the families and loved ones of our community, providing a final resting place for generations of residents, veterans, and pioneers who have contributed to the history and growth of the Barstow region; and
WHEREAS, the Barstowians laid to rest at the Barstow Cemetery include decorated, nationally renowned veterans of the First World War, the Second World War, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars; and
WHEREAS, the maintenance and preservation of the Barstow Cemetery is essential to ensuring dignity, respect, and care for those interred, as well as comfort and peace for the families who visit; and
WHEREAS, the City of Barstow recognizes the importance of safeguarding the cemetery’s grounds, infrastructure, and services to uphold our shared responsibility of remembrance; and WHEREAS, limited resources and increasing costs place a significant burden on the local community, creating challenges in sustaining the level of care and maintenance that the cemetery requires; and
WHEREAS, collaboration between the United States, the State of California, the County of San Bernardino, the City of Barstow, and community stakeholders is vital to securing the long-term stability and preservation of the Barstow Cemetery; and WHEREAS, the Barstow community is requesting Federal, State, and County resources and support, whether through financial assistance, maintenance resources, or other means, to ensure the cemetery remains a place of dignity, honor, and peace for generations to come.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Barstow hereby proclaims its commitment to the preservation and care of the Barstow Cemetery and respectfully calls upon the County of San Bernardino to join in this effort by providing needed support and resources to maintain and protect this sacred place.
The City Council of the City of Barstow also respectfully calls upon President Donald J. Trump, U.S. Congressman Jay Obernolte, U.S. Senators Alex Padilla and Adam Schiff, Secretary of Veterans Affairs Douglas A. Collins, California State Governor Gavin Newsom, California State Assemblyman Tom Lackey, and California State Senator Rosilicie Ochoa Bogh to each take action to assist the City of Barstow and the Barstow community in protecting and restoring the Barstow Cemetery.
