COUNCIL AGENDA ITEM
AGENDA MATTER:
APPROVAL OF TRAVEL FOR PLANNING COMMISSIONERS TO ATTEND THE LEAGUE OF CALIFORNIA CITIES 2026 PLANNING COMMISSIONER ACADEMY
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
Designed for new and seasoned planning commissioners alike, the Planning Commissioners Academy expands an individual’s knowledge on a wide range of topics relevant to their role within their city and fosters relationships and communication with peers. The conference provides information about the roles and responsibilities of a planning commissioner, offers a basic legal and practical framework, and delves into emerging issues of importance for planning commissioners today.
This year, the Planning Commissioners Academy is being held in Anaheim, California, from Wednesday, March 11th, through Friday, March 13th. Following approval of the FY25/26 budget, the consensus amongst Community Development Staff is to send two (2) Planning Commissioners.
DISCUSSION:
The League of California Cities has announced the 2026 Planning Commissioners Academy and sessions proposed at this year’s conference (see attached). In years past, the City has sent Commission members and one to two staff members annually to this conference to keep up on the latest trends, laws, and upcoming legislative changes in the Planning field. As noted, this year the City can send two (2) Planning Commissioners.
The estimated costs to attend are as follows (per Commissioner):
Registration $ 700.00
Travel/Meals $ 300.00
Hotel $ 450.00
TOTAL $ 1,450.00
COLLECTIVE TOTAL (2 COMMISSIONERS) $ 2,900.00
The attached listing has the full schedule of sessions. As noted, the sessions are from Wednesday, March 11th, through Friday, March 13th. Meals and travel (mileage) are reimbursable, provided they follow the guidelines of the City’s Expense Reimbursement Policy, and must be verified with supporting documents such as receipts for meals.
