DISCUSSION REGARDING POTENTIAL RENAMING OF FIELDS AT CITY PARKS IN HONOR OF
PUBLIC SAFETY AND MILITARY SERVICE
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
The City Council has expressed interest in discussing the potential renaming of fields at City parks to honor the Barstow Police Department, Barstow Fire Department, Military Service Members, and First Responders. This item is presented for discussion purposes only, and no formal action is being recommended at this time. The City Council may provide direction to staff on whether to proceed with developing a formal proposal.
DISCUSSION:
The City Council would like to discuss the potential renaming of fields within City parks as a means of recognizing and honoring the service and contributions of public safety personnel and military members.
This concept would provide an opportunity to designate individual fields in honor of the Barstow Police Department, Barstow Fire Department, military service members, and first responders, creating a meaningful and visible tribute within community recreational spaces. Such recognition could be implemented through field naming, signage, or commemorative elements.
At this time, no specific fields have been formally designated, and no renaming plan is being recommended. This item is intended to allow for City Council discussion and to provide direction to staff.
Should the City Council wish to move forward, staff can return with additional information, including identification of specific field locations, naming options, consistency with Chapter 12.20 of the Barstow Municipal Code (Street/Facility Naming and Property Numbering), estimated costs, and implementation considerations.
FISCAL IMPACT:
There is no fiscal impact associated with this discussion item. Any future costs related to signage, installation, and updates to City materials will be presented for City Council consideration RECOMMENDED ACTION:
