DISCUSSION
The City recently received a request from Long Beach Transit to install and modify red curb parking restrictions at three (3) bus stop locations. The basis of their request is to improve access and clearance for their buses at each of these bus stops. Their initial request was:
• Artesia & Bixby (NE corner) add 30 feet of red curb
• Artesia & Canehill add 30 feet of red curb to existing red curb, to provide more room for the bus to maneuver into the bus stop.
• Artesia & Woodruff (NW corner) add 30 to 40 feet of red curb (relocate the existing bus stop westerly).
In response to this request, the City Engineer and Public Works Manager conducted a site visit assessment at each location. The assessment determined that the quantity of red curb requested was excessive, and that less red curb parking restrictions would meet the needs of Long Beach Transit while minimizing the loss of on street parking.
Following that determination, we conducted a virtual meeting with Long Beach Transit and they agreed to reduce the amount of red curb requested, particularly at the Artesia Boulevard at Canehill Avenue stop.
At the June 21, 2022, Public Safety Commission meeting, the Commission amended the 30 feet at Artesia Boulevard and Woodruff Avenue to the initial 40 foot request from Long Beach Tranist. Since the neighborhood businesses have on-site parking and no residents are located within the 300’ radius of this location, staff agreed with the Public Safety Commission’s amendment.
Hence to improve the ingress/egress needs of Long Beach Transit buses, the subject red curb restrictions are recommended. The proposed red curb parking restrictions are illustrated on the attached aerial photographs.
On June 7, 2022, the City Engineer provided notice to area residents of this request and that this matter would be brought before the Public Safety Commission at its June 21, 2022, meeting. To date the City has received no response to the notifications.
